OH S**T

SOH-CM-2025
Wanted to paint something for the AH Fury this morning, and discovered that the directory were I keep all my paintwork has been corrupted...oh s**t.
Invested in recovery software, but to no avail it seems... and my last backup was, as usual, quite a while ago. So gone are my artwork for the T-33, Gipsy Moth, Sea Fury, Avenger, F27, Stearman, Duck and god knows what else.
Something similar happened just before Xmas, but then I managed to recover everything. Invested in a new harddisk, and now this. So depressing...

but I'm off to Italy tomorrow, small holiday, so it's not all bad

Oh damn Jankees. I guess you can retrieve a lot from your account on fs.to?

Oh, I’m so sorry. If you have any cloud storage through OneDrive, Dropbox, etc. maybe consider mirroring your source file directory to one of those services. I know some people are reticent to put sensitive files in cloud storage, but for things like art templates it’s a great way to keep those backed up online with no effort after the initial install.

I still remember Jim Sacks losing a ton of work he had done on an Amiga game back in the 80s to a floppy virus. Made me a little more careful about backups.

that is not the problem, it's all my original photoshop files that are gone
Jankees, you work on two PC's one in Belgium and the other one in the Netherlands. No backup from one to the other? Just thinking out loud!

And talking about back-ups now is like " mustard after the meal " as we say in the Netherlands .

If it's any help, I got in the habit of cloning entire drives to act as back-ups.
Direct cloning is fairly easy and cheap. It only costs one new drive (HD, SSD) plus your time to clone it.
The only real downside is your OS stuff on the clone being out-of-date and possibly losing the newest stuff you were working on. :indecisiveness:

I too, lost all of my original Photoshop textures a couple of years ago. Oddly, it was kind of a blessing in disguise. It allowed me to take a breather from repainting and just kick the tires, light the fire, and just enjoy the flight sim for the sake of flying.

For years I ran mirrored disks and a daily tape backup on top of that. But at the end of the day, if the data itself becomes corrupted, all you are mirroring and backing up is corrupted data. Now I just manually back up my important personal stuff (a very small amount of data) to a couple of portable devices. That only takes a few minutes.

Oh man, that sucks! I feel for you.
Had a HD-crash back in 2020 when I was just about to restart modelling. All 3DS Max files of my payware FSX models where on that disk.
About a half year later I finally found a trust- and priceworthy recovering service who recovered all_my_files for a pricetag in the lower 100ish range as opposed to all those sharks who asked 3000 before they even started thinking about looking at it.

BackBlaze has saved me from a few similar scares over the years. Unlimited space and up to a year of file history for something like 10 USD/month. I currently have about 24TB of data with them and recommend them to everyone!

Hopefully you can find a recovery method for what you've lost so far!

I am so sorry to hear that! You do fine work and I know the time one can spend on getting it right. Hope somehow something may come back.

Take a breather, excellent plan. I have a week now at the Lago di Como, then we'll see
Oh that's really nice! My single logbook hour on floats was in Como back in 2016. Very friendly people at the club there and a great experience as the scenery is magnificant. Got to try splash n'goes and all that nice stuff. If you can afford it try it out!

a miracle!
After trying all kinds of recovery software to no avail, I go on holiday (really nice, such a great area, but did not visit the club in Como. Did see a lot of floatplanes flying ove rthe lake though, mainly 172's), I come home to Belgium, go to the Netherlands to work, I plug the harddisk into my computer at my home in the Netherlands, it get a message 'there are some errors with this disk, do you want to repair them?" I say yes and 15 minutes later everything is back in perfect order. Why didn't all the other computers I tried earlier do this??
OK, now I have to think of backups...

That is brilliant news!! Indeed, buy a new one, or better still, a NAS that you can use for backups.

BTW, are there differences in Windows version or build between your two PC's?
