Howdy. After about 5 years, and after finally getting a new puter, I decide to try and climb back in to FSX. The problem seems to be that after 2 installs of FSX and Acceleration. I fly for a while and I an told I have to register the sim. Has the registration been removed, or is there another registration site?

It seems a lot of people have been having the same issue. You could try the 'registry trick' described in the posts above or you could get the Steam Edition (FSX:SE) which regularly goes on sale and I got years ago for $5 USD. In all honesty the Steam Edition is better than the stock version + acceleration as it was tweaked and improved and it much more stable and has all the graphic enhancements and tweaks that you used to have to do manually built in and all your current aircraft will work just fine in it. You can also uninstall and re-install as many times as you like with no issues. The current price on Steam is about $20 USD, not the cheapest it's ever been but not a bank breaker either.

Another alternative is to move to P3D v4.5 which in my opinion is a very good choice as all your FSX aircraft will still work in it and it has much better graphics, much better frame rates and no 'Out of Memory' (OOM) errors as it is a 64-bit system rather than a 32-bit system. v4.5 is currently selling for about $60 USD.

 
I agree, it's easier to either use FSX: Steam Edition or spend more and buy PrePar3D. If going the P3D route, version 4.5 has been reported to have the most compatibility with FSX add-on's.
 
How to fix the PartsMgr registration error
Warning: Proceed with caution. You can cause serious issues with your system if you modify the Windows Registry incorrectly. It is highly recommended that you back up your registry before you start.
  1. Back up your registry:
    • Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog.
    • Type regedit and click OK.
    • In the Registry Editor, go to File > Export....
    • Save the backup file to a location you can easily find, such as your Desktop.
  2. Navigate to the correct registry key:
    • In the Registry Editor, use the left-hand panel to navigate to this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E967-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
    • Be careful to choose the correct key, as there may be other entries that look similar.
  3. Correct the value:
    • In the right-hand panel, find and double-click the entry named UpperFilters.
    • A dialog box will appear to edit the value.
    • Change the value data from whatever it is currently (e.g., partmgr in all lowercase, or 0) to exactly PartMgr (with a capital 'P' and 'M').
    • Click OK to save the change.
  4. Restart and re-activate FSX:
    • Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
    • Launch FSX again. The registration or activation wizard should now appear, allowing you to enter your product key.
If the registry fix doesn't work
If correcting the registry entry does not solve the problem, try these additional steps:
  • Run as Administrator: Right-click the FSX executable file and choose "Run as administrator" to ensure it has proper permissions.
  • Install with compatibility mode: Some users have reported success by running the FSX installer in compatibility mode for an older version of Windows.
  • Reinstall the Acceleration Pack: The error can be related to the Acceleration expansion pack specifically. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the Acceleration Pack may resolve the issue.
  • Use the Microsoft activation reset tool: A legacy tool from Microsoft can sometimes fix activation issues. AVSIM, a major flight sim website, has resources and forums discussing its us

Thanks gang, registry a bit over my pay grade. Being 77 doesnt help either. I'll see where I go from here. All good stuff!

The partmgr vs PartMgr is usually the issue with activating FSX. For some reason reinstalling on new computers botches the registry entry every time. I reinstalled 2 times on new systems and had to fix each one with this method.

If you can't check your registry get someone computer savy to help you. This is likely the issue. You should not have to purchase the sim from Steam or P3D just to use the old software.

I am not saying either of those options is a bad idea just not necessary.

Another probem discovered: I cannot down load the Exras, Fonts, >>SDK<< or SXS folders because I'm considered to be running a trial version, even though its not the case. These are not on the SOH Resources pages, so I think I'll try a few other sites. I wanted to get back into tweaking which I enjoy as much as flying.
 
Finally got the SDK to work after 3 installs just before Christmas. Still have the problem with being recognized as a trial install. I did find that the certificate for my Acceleration expired in 2021. Still get abot 40 minutes flying time and cannot use some key commands, but I'm still flying.
