Online play

I am wondering about online play. I have never done it with FSX. While many sim pilots like to fly the big jetliners and simulate all the traffic and radio calls and all that, I like to climb into a smaller fighter type plane, modern or vintage, and go buzzing through the grand Canyon or the Matanuska Mountains outside of Anchorage or whatever. I am wondering if that can be done online and if there are any others that like to do such things. Follow the leader, canyon racing or even simulated dog fights if you have the aircraft with the right avionics.

Some members here (Including me) like to fly on the Netwings server through the FsHost program; no annoying ATC, IVAO or whatever on there; just fly what and where you like.

:)

Okay cool. I know in playing online with race cars that everyone has to have the same vehicle files to make it work right. I assume it is the same with this? I have a few fighter jet types that I like to fly but I have modified them slightly to make the response to a given flight control input more realistic and also a gauge or two on the VC's have been modified/moved/replaced. Would this be a problem?

Nope! The only problem that could occur is if someone doesn't have the same aircraft installed as you are flying, then he will not see it. (And vice versa of course)

So if the aircraft.cfg file of the plane I am flying is slightly modified to make it a bit more realistic or make the afterburner work properly, it will work as long as others have the same plane...? Do they have to have the same modified .cfg file as I do? This wouldn't be a problem; I don't do anything special to it, just change a few settings.

FSX has a strange system for determining aircraft replacement models. It is somehow bound to the engine type, but beyond that, I have no clue. I spent months trying to figure it out and gave up frustrated.

If you load in for example a PMDG 747, likely it will just show up as the default 747 unless they have that addon. Inversely, if I load up in a P-51, people will see me buzzing around in a Cessna 172. I usually just make sure my flight plan is filed correctly or identify my aircraft to the controller when in their airspace so they don't freak out when they see a Cessna 172 doing 200 knots on downwind.

Interestingly enough, before SP2, if you have certain non-standard default engine types (for example, 3 engine jet, 4 engine prop) you didn't show up at all to anyone else. You could communicate, but there was no model representation in the game. Apparently, and MS didn't tell anyone, this was fixed with SP2/Acceleration.

In Fs9 the game looked at the first line in the entried for each aircraft in the aircraft.cfg ('Title='). If you don't change that, others will see your aircraft. I think it still works the same in FsX, but it could also be the FsHost client that works that way.

So if I have an F-5E Tiger II add-on and others don't have it, what will it show up as? A 172 that cruises at 500 kias?
