95% of my online MP flying in FSX is done via a direct connection with friends (sometimes several of us at a time). Of the remaining 5% most is done via FS Host (despite the close proximity lag which makes formation flying near impossible) and only very, very, rarely do I get onto Gamespy and only then if the first two options are not available for some reason.
 
Direct connect whenever the server is up, else for now it is gamespy, under bushflying. Can't get fshost to work just yet with my new router. :( Both have weak and strong points but in the end FSX MP is still pretty much screwed up.

For example, it is impossible for the host to change aircraft. If he wants to change aircraft he'll have to quit the session and restart it with the new plane loaded.

Ahh, this is only an issue if you fly in uncontrolled airspace. Like the real world, there is a TON of uncontrolled airspace.

Anyways, just a thought. FS-MP does a lot of things with FS multiplayer that nobody else has been able to do. Ranged radio coms, real world frequencies, a live map, a flight planner, etc.

Great site, and I highly recommend it. The servers are REALLY good too. I haven't seen them down in over a year.
 
I go to Netwings usually, but lately its been empty. No one flying. My hours that I drop in though can be eratic and probably too late for east coast people.

There is a neat tool you can download at Netwings.org that can scan the internet for FS hosts. I think its called FS Spy, not sure, but you can find loads of servers out there to fly on. Alot of them (perhaps 25%) are non-membership and open to the public. Some good German sites.

Which reminds me, I used to fly alot on that Swiss sim forum/web site. They had a server that was always open and had some cool people in there. I have long since forgotten where they were on the web. (Lost my last computer, lost the link as well).

I see I am still in the 'Hall of Fame' as the 40th person to complete the entire hoplist although I have now flown it several times in different aircraft. It gets really interesting (read difficult) if you set yourself a 10,000 ft altitude cap as that stops you going 'over the top' and makes route planning that much harder!

Has anyone been able to connect over a LAN? I'm in Iraq, and my internet connection is dismal at best. We have a fully functioning network in our housing area, but my buddies and I haven't been able to connect. We can usually see the other person's hosted session, but can't connect.

You can change aircraft anytime you like using FSHost and not have to leave the sim. FSHost stays connected no matter what you want to do. In fact if your not careful you can shut down FSX and then figure out hours later that your still hooked to the server. :)

Check that you have the correct ports open on each machine and that the network router also has the correct ports open is my best suggestion.

I know the owner of A2A has FSX running on a local LAN in his home with several computers connected to it and all able to connect together for MP flying.

On many of the model types after you click the model number you can then click the actual sim or game your using for info specific to that software.
