OS2U Kingfisher Question

I've been reloading some stuff and came across these 2 Kingfishers. One is by Tim Conrad (Piglet) and the other is by Paul Clawson. I'm looking for an objective opinion here---- Which one is the best ? Has anyone compared them ?

I lean towards most anything by "Piglet" but am just curious to hear other views, both of these are pretty dated by current standards but choices are limited.

Piglet's version has my preference. It looks good has a nice VC and there are loads of repaints available for it.

Paul "Put Put" Clawson's version comes with a working catapult. Which is of course a feature Piglet's version doesn't have.

So it is a bit more what your personal preference is.

Cheers,
Huub

Actually, I would run Tim's Kingfisher instead if my own because of the VC and it is a little newer. However, it has a beaching gear that doesn't look right on the catapult.

Best, Paul

If I turn off crash detection in the sim my copy of Tim's Kingfisher behaves correctly coming out of the water,

Best, Paul

I thought the Beaching gear was a mod done by "Mick" therefore if I don't install no problem, just won't be able to beach correct ? Or as Paul suggests turn off crash detection, since I never crash anyway (and bears don't shet in the woods either). Paul your humble endorsement is enough for me, but don't sell your work short, I still fly your Martin B-10 on a regular basis nice aircraft !!!!!!

Hi,

If you checked the video I posted you will know my setting was "no crash detection" as the plane pass trough buildings
If I put "crash detection" .. well .. the plane crash :)

I have Piglet's Kingfisher in FSX (his FSX version not a port-over) and I do not see those issues shown in the video. It looks like there is something wrong with the contact points for the beaching gear.

I went back and looked at the history of Tim's Kingfisher at Flightsim. Hard to believe it was originally posted as an FS9 model in 2005. Time has flown so I must be having fun. It did not have a beaching gear at that point. The beaching gear mod was added by Tim himself some time later. Some of the latest files say it is for FS9/FSX. I don't see that Tim did any mods specifically for FSX so I assume these just have the necessary changes to the texture formats. Several of the repaints include changes to the aircraft.cfg file and .air file. I haven't looked to see if the contact points have been changed.
Claudius24, on further review of your video, I agree with Larry, you have a contact point problem. I also run it in FSX with no problem. Here are the contact points from my copy:

Hi,

LOL ....

5l9zdd.jpg

This now with the contact points posted above :)
And no possible to take off from water .. full power and AC stay static :)
I must add that with those contact points the aircraft is good on ground ...
I must also add that the contact points above are not those as in the ones in the Piglet original release ...
AC used is the Piglet + update with gear. (no other changes in air file or aircraft.cfg)
So .. return to the starting box .. LOL.

Yes Tim's Kingfisher was initially released without beaching gear, and that's the version you should use of you want to launch it from the cats on the Virtual Navy's cruisers and Paul's battlewagons.

An update added the beaching gear, and that's the one you want if you're going to fly from coves and park on the beach.

You can have both versions. Just make sure the two aircraft have slightly different folder names, then make sure that neither the Title or Variation lines are identical in the UI sections. That's easy enough to do just by adding a couple characters, like "bg" for "beaching gear" to the Titles and Variations of one or both planes.

Paints will MOSTLY work with either model, but on some paints the artist left off either the main gear wheels on paints intended just for floatplanes. That bit can be easily copied from another and pasted into the appropriate texture file. (All my pre-WW2 paints work equally well on any version of the plane, wheels or beaching gear or just floats.)

You can make Tim's plane catapult-ready the same way as Paul's is. Either way you need the Carrier Operations Gauge Package, as that's the source of the catapult gauge. The package contains instructions on how to add the gauge to any plane, and you've got Paul's Kingfisher with the gauge already installed to refer to for reference.

Catapult launches from those big, old gunnery ships really rock!
