OT...Hurricane crash

Thank God it was only minor damage. Could have been much worse for the pilot. Remember what happened to Charlie Hillard.

Not really a crash!

Oh Dear!

But I don't really see how it can be classed as crash. More of a minor (if not expensive) mishap in my book. As usual, the media has blown it out of all proportion with a series of poorly written and researched articles, and decided to to over dramatise it using the word 'crash'!

But whatever the media has called it, it's a real shame though for all concerned in both it's rebuild and looking after it. At least no one was injured. (You've got to feel for the owner, as it would seem it was his first flight in the aircraft).

Whilst it has the metal Hamilton Standard prop & blades that was fitted to many of the Canadian built Hurricanes (as opposed to the wooden Rotol blades & units fitted to the UK built machines), it seems the prop strike occured at low power, so hopefully the engine has got off lightly in terms of shock-loading damage, although I guess only a full inspection of it will reveal if that is indeed the case.

More info here along with a description of what actually happened by someone who was there taking photos.

Hi all,
A crash is what happened to the TBM the other day. This is a minor but probably expensive prang.

I know Pete Teichman, and I'm sure he's pretty pi$$ed of right now!! Hopefully it won't be too long before we see this bird back in the air, the same thing happened to BBMF Hurri LF363 at Duxford a few years back.

Its not bad, looking at it, but a look inside underneath might reveal a bent engine frame perhaps.(hope not!) It looks totally repairable but yeah, it will be expensive! Its not a crash and its not even a crashlanding, its just a minor prang, as the RAF blokes in the old days would have said.

I was wondering what kind of engine damage you get in a crash like this? The prop suddenly stops but the engine keeps running. That must put a lot of strain on the propellor shaft.

Yes shock loading is the big problem, and reason it may take longer to fix and will be very expensive too! The word is that it hopefully she'll be fixed by May all being well.

I wonder what the CHIRP report for this one will look like.....

Probably not as funny as the one I saw a while ago:

On landing aircraft reported objects in the runway threshold area. On subsequent investigation these proved ot be runway threshold lights.

D'oh

Shame about the hurricane.
