OT - will War Thunder replace IL2?

I don't see how War Thunder could replace any reasonable realistic sim, although IL-2 is getting old. It is a shooter, which uses WW2 aircraft as a backstory. You have pretty good set of controls yes, but FM is really light even at the most realistic setting. War Thunder is pretty much as flight simulator as World of Tanks is a tank sim.

It is still a nice game, although it is actually at the beta stage. It looks good and runs pretty much 60 fps capped on my computer maxed out with 6080x1080. I haven't tested large battles, so I'll see if I have to crank some options down. I quickly tested War Thunder in the weekend and was impressed, though I only flew a bit of the tutorial.

Edit: althogh there are content to purchase, I've heard that it is not in any way necessary to purchase to play the game succesfully. And of course dev team has to have some way to make money. It is pretty much the same with Rise of Flight too.

HI

I agree having flown it now. its very pretty but very arcade and is always multiplayer - I like to set up my own editored battles so I wont play this much free or not!

the link I posted is for the NEW IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad - go to the link and watch the vid...
it is exactly what you are looking for - the OP too...and check out the forum for more ingame beta vids...

Pay to Win War Thunder where Stukas can be bounced by Corsairs :kilroy: is not a serious combat flight sim.

They do have Arcade, Historical, and Full Real battle options, at a first glance it's a pretty cool game. Quite a step above World of Planes, and although maybe an arcady environment, I wouldn't rate the FM and other aspects of IL2 aircraft above it. Worth exploring for free IMO. Did some tutorials, will do some online "Full Real" action and report back.

So far I've seen sufficient participation in Arcade and Historical (mid realism) servers to gain entry after a short period... there doesn't seem to be enough interest at the moment in the Full Realism servers to even start an event... it just times out after several minutes.

I did get the DLC Mustang and Dora packages, and tooled around in 'test flight' mode - nicely done, better graphics and better effects than IL2 in general, ground handling better, FM maybe slightly better fidelity, but you'll probably have to adjust control response a bit in setup. Nice engine vibes from running full WEP in the Dora, as well as airframe vibe from shooting cannons. Certainly the best "Dora" in a shooting game yet, IMO, though of limited utility until you advance to a point where you can use it in the dynamic campaign or events other than 'test flight'.

Oh, and along with many of you, I've pre-ordered the 777 Studios upcoming IL2 BoS... "War Thunder" is just something to tide me over til then :)
