Our baby is growing....

Our colt that was born on Mother's Day back in May is almost 7 months old now. He's getting to be quite the little man. Here's a couple of pics of him that were taken today.

Oh goodness, Chief has grown to be so big... the last time I saw him was he was just a baby... Now he is bigger that you! :applause:

He flies his tail like an Arabian...Is he?
 
Just like everything else in this world ... always moving forward ... (well almost everything ...)

He's a mutt. His mom is a Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred cross and even the owner of the stallion don't what the stallion is other than Chief takes after him on color. For all I know there is some Arabian hiding in there.

We've been working with him since before he was a week old on things a good horse should know and he's quite smart with a real good nature.

They grow the fastest early on. He'll continue to grow until he's about 2 years old. The next few years after that it'll be fusing bones to make him more solid. They do that from the hooves up.
 
Lovely young hoss there Willy. I sure miss riding horses, get to go on occasion when I visit a friend in Culpepper, VA, whose wife owns and trains riders on their farm. They're like super-sized dogs, very willing, devoted, and loving when the same is given in return. I have never been away from them. Like dogs too, horses can sense horse people and know who to trust.

Good looking young horse you have there Willy. A few years back, I worked for a guy who trained race horses...I was his stable cleaner and extra hand. Just a few hours each day to put some extra green in my wallet. After the first three weeks of back breaking work getting the stalls into proper shape (the 3 guys before me had no work ethic to speak of and no clue about proper horse care), it only took me an hour to an hour and a half to clean the 20 stalls each day....but I would hang around for 3 or 4 hours just to help with the horses and to spend time with those majestic creatures. There was one horse that I did not like working with...he was a pure, unpredictable pain in the butt...but the rest of the horses were a joy to work with. One horse, Smoke Stack Lightning, a big gray dapple, gave everyone a hard way to go...even Rich, the trainer, with 50 years of horse experience under his belt...but SSL was a big baby as long as he could see me. SSL's owner wanted me to buy him...I lived in a 1 bedroom upstairs apartment....where would I keep a horse?

We've been kicking around the idea of finding Chief a new home. We've given him a good start, but me and Mrs Willy aren't in too good a health to be messing with a young colt as far as breaking him to ride and other physical things he's going to need to learn. To be honest our pasture is a bit small for 3 horses and we need to concentrate more on our two older ones that are already broke to ride. They've had a vacation this past summer as we've been occupied with Chief.

We'd put a few feelers out a week or so ago and it looks like come Saturday morning Chief will be moving to his new home up near Murray Kentucky and be the darling of a young lady's heart. Her and her parents came out yesterday to look at him and mess around with him and they're smitten with him. They've got other horses and can give Chief the kind of attention he's going to need in the next few years.

We'll miss the little guy, but it's in his best interest to go on and learn new things that we can't teach him.

Awww! Kinda bittersweet though Willy! I'm happy you guys were able to find a good home for Chief!
