'Out of Memory' Question

Okay, I've just experienced something I haven't had before; that dreaded 'FS won't start' - well it does but doesn't get far telling me that Windows is out of memory.

It happened after installing one more level of scenery, bringing my total number of entries to 657. On removal, the sim loads again as normal. I thought I'd read somewhere that the number of scenery entries FS9 accepted was 999 (not 656).

Can anyone enlighten me further on this?

Cheers, Ardy.

My guess is that it's not FS that's reached its limit but your confuter. Whether the limit that's been reached is that of your video card's video RAM or your system RAM, or something else, is beyond me. But whichever it is, I think the clue is that the error message says that "Windows" is out of memory and not anything about FS9.

The message was a product of launching FS - nothing else running at the time. Everything else before and after running fine as usual. As I mentioned above, as soon as that new scenery layer was gone, so was the problem. Actually, my machine's not bad for it's age (3.2Ghz Intel i5 quad processor, 4G RAM, Radeon Sapphire 7850 video card with 2G dedicated RAM) and nothing else has ever caused me any such memory failure...ho hum...A.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have more than 656 scenery layers?

MSFS only loads sceneries an aircraft in a "bubble" of about 100 nm around the user aircraft (you can't see any farther than that anyway).
If the amount of data in that "bubble" exceeds the virtual address space allocated to FS9 by Windows, you will get an "Out Of Memory" crash.

Solutions:
Trim the fat from your simulator.
Uninstall stuff, shrink the textures from some other stuff, etc...

This has nothing to do with the number of addons.

It most likely means the last scenery you added has a bad file, probably the afcad.

Try adding a different scenery to verify it isn't a quantity issue.

cheers,
Lane

BTW, what was the last scenery you added?

Think I've found the problem. Although my current FS9 install is about 3 years old, I've still not added everything from previously saved archives. Having tried other addons as new scenery layers, I've found that some will cause a crash to desktop during FS loading, while others have worked without any problem. I'm guessing that over the years and multiple HD transfers, some files have become corrupted. Or maybe I didn't archive carefully enough (missed terrain textures, etc). Some was actually 'rescued' (or not - as maybe the case) from a Hard Drive failure.

Still, nearly all is back in, can't complain about what I have got working!

So not a scenery limit issue.

Thanks for your suggestion Lane - I was trying that very approach in my absence.

a guess

Did you checked your svchost process ?
I had the issue (on W8/64) with FS closing/out of memory because of that nice windows stuff, running all my memory and processor (100% on i7...)

Cheers All, but definite file corruption - just found that some sceneries causing problems have preview/screenshot JPGs that Windoze can no longer read.

As I said above, not a problem - all the important stuff is back in and working fine.

If it's taken me 3 years to even try re-installing these sceneries, anything not working I'm not going to miss now. And in an idle moment I can always go searching again (mostly freeware downloads left at this stage. I think).

FWIW I have been using Process Lassoo since I saw it pushed on the P3D forums where there was a thread on OOM. Since then I have not experienced any out of memory crashes at all in P3D FSX not FS2004. I used to be plagued by them especially in FSX where I have lots of add-ons.
It is free for personal use and sits quietly on the taskbar.
Get it here https://bitsum.com/processlasso/

Hmmm - Curious. That blows that 999 limit myth out of the window then.

Cheers, A.

Think the 999 myth/limit is to do with the FSManager software.. it wont process scenery.cfg if there are more than 999 entries.
just had a quick look after adding some more sceneries, up to 1039 now :)
