P-40 Warhawks

Ok I have just about every model of the Warhawk. I was wondering if anybody knows if there is a P-40D and a P-40L model for CFS2?

Opps! I'm sorry, I just noticed that they are repaints (texture Only) of a P-40E and not the entire aircraft. (P-40L)

Hmmmmm

"...[FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]Then came the P-40K, which simply had a more powerful Allison engine installed, again the RAF renamed this one, it becoming the Kittyhawk III. Meanwhile Curtiss attempted to reduce the weight of the Merlin-engined variants and these were designated the P-40L...."

Is there a MAJOR visual difference between the variants ?

Not a major difference in appearance, but it is noticed. L being Merlin powered lacks the scope for the Allison's carburetor.

Yes, there were major visual and performance differences between the main production blocks. There was some bleed through with the designations sometimes being late in catching up with what was actually produced - for example the early F and late F models and the K and M models.

The E model was the basis for the early F model which had a Packard Merlin engine replacing the Allison. This required a deeper chin radiator, the front of which was closer to the prop spinner. And the carb air scoop on the top of the cowling was eliminated making it flatter rather than curve of the carb air scoop.

The late F model had the same nose redesign but the vertical tail and rudder moved significantly farther aft by inserting a plug at the rear that extended the fuselage length. The horizontal tailplane did not move aft along with the vertical tail. There was another version of the late F model which was a lightened model which was designated the L. In appearance it was almost identical, but it only carried 2 guns in each wing instead of the standard 3 per side.

Meanwhile the K version with an uprated Allison engine was also produced as Merlin engines were being allocated to higher priority aircraft - such as the P-51 - and would not be available for the P-40 production numbers envisioned. A curved leading edge was added the vertical tail to extend it forward which gave it a much fatter tail.

This was not all that successful and so the later K version adopted the stretched fuselage of the late F model. You would think it would have gotten a new designation but it continued to be designated the K model. After a few hundred were produced, it was redesignated the M. The major recognition detail between a late K model and an M model was a small square filter screen placed just in front of the exhausts.

The last major production block was the N model which was the a major redesign to get more performance while still using the Allison engine. It used the longer fuselage but the construction was lighter and the rear fuselage behind the cockpit was cut away and a plexiglass greenhouse canopy added in its place, giving the pilot much better rearward vision and was lighter.

I love that XP-37, SC. Love to give that a fly. Bones

Someone put out an "L". I forget who it was BUT it's painted up in four schemes, including "Wairarapu Wildcat" (RNZAF) and "Spike" (USAAF, 33rd FG, Col. Momyer).

Sorry I can't be more help...

Just got my computer out of the shop and can (maybe) help a bit more...

The P-40F/L in question's model name is P40STUD. I hope this helps as I simply cannot remember who put it out. I hope you find it; it's great to fly!!
