P-51 Just flew over

I was sitting on my back porch just a few minutes ago enjoying a fine cigar when a P-51 flew over headed to the beach, he had taken off from PFN and was about 2000 ft when he came directly over my house. I heard him coming before I saw him, the engine sound was unmistakable.

There is a B-24, a B-17 and the P-51 at Panama City airport thru tomorrow giving rides. The B-17 is Nine-O-Nine.

I used to fly into Tami Ami on occasion and some guy had a Thunder Mustang that he hangared there. I saw him take off and land a few times. Once I actually saw him do a high speed flyby right over the runway. Yes it is a towered airport with controlled airspace and highly illegal but the tower must have permitted it because I saw him do it. I was actually facing away from the runway and heard him before I turned and saw him. I can't say how fast he was going but by the time I turned around he was nearly across the airfield and starting a very steep climb. It was so cool I think the hair on my neck stood up.
 
Wow, what rare oppurtunities to savour! :) I love the whine the Mustangs make, don't know if it's the supercharger or airflow across the intake or what but its always causes one of those goosebump moments.

Almost as nice as seeing a Spitfire ;)
 
There are actually two things better than the sound of a Merlin - two Merlins (get a Mossie back in the air soon, please!) and four Merlins (I hope I can wangle another airshow this summer for the BBMF).

My two favorite sounding engines are definitely the P-51D and the Spitfire Mk-14. I'm sure the very sound of these engines inspired confidence in their pilots.
 
The Griffon and Merlin do make a superb noise, I agree.

Another one with a nice "whistle/whine" is the DB605. There's been a (real) 109G at our local airshow for the last couple of years. Very nice to see.
 
How about the Napier Sabre? I just finished tweaking the Sabre sounds I DLd from here. Let me know if you're interested and I may post another thread. Never heard one live. Mossie and Lanc? Dying to hear those.
