P3 Performance Question

Forgive me if this has been asked already. With my current rig I am running P2 with the graphic settings at 4, 4, 3, 4, 4. It runs smooth and looks great. Since P3 has all high res scenery in it AND better AI, is it likely I will need to drop my settings down a bit in order to make it run smooth?

My rig is:
Intel Duo Core 2 - 3.16Ghz
2 GB DDR2 RAM
280 GTX 1GB PCIe video card
Vista OS

you'd think so but I believe I'm right in remembering Winder or Polovski posting that because of the optimisation that Winders done it shouldn't need that doing.
Certainly OVS's posts imply that the game runs well even on a low spec machine......but we'll no doubt find out in good time.

My machine is a P4 3.6 GHz with a RADEON X850 XT video card. In a P3 furball, my average rate is around 50fps, and even if the fight is over an aerodrome, doesn't drop below 25. That's with graphic detail a/c:5, clouds:5, everything else at 2.
Cheers,

As screwy as this sounds, run your resolution as high as your monitor will allow. And Drop your Clouds to 1, no sense wasting computer power on clouds. The power you saved on Clouds, use it on effects, bringing it up to 5, that's your ability to see tracer fire, and where it's coming from :kilroy:

My reasoning for the Clouds on 1, can you visually see the difference, between 1 and 5 ? Most can't. And you don't want to fly INTO them on purpose

On the contrary Gimpyguy, surely finding just up ahead a nice dollop of cumulo nimbus, about two miles thick and deep, might be an attractive sight if you're running for home with a dozen Albatrosses on your tail.

Right up until you fly into those clouds, at which point you'll be saying "Dorothy....I don't think we're in Kansas anymore":d

I remember the first time I flew into a cloud in OFF. Ever since I've appreciated the luxury of an artificial horizon (and an ASI and a VSI and a T/B indicator...) in modern aircraft so much more.

Gimpyguy,

That is an interesting idea about turning clouds down to 1. I usually have them set to 4 and never have stuttering or frame rate loss when I am pointed skyward. It's usually when I drop over into a dive and my screen is suddenly filled with terrain and scenery that I see a stutter or frame drop. I will try your suggestion tonight though. I do run my resolution as high as my monitor allows. 1680 x 1050 on my 22" flat panel.

That is good news about the optimizations. I can't wait to put P3 through it's paces. It certainly looks awesome from the videos.

Well I have a similar system (but 8GB ram) and am now on 5-5-4-5-5.
(terrain 4). in P3.

Clouds on 5, I think this is why some people say AI does see through the clouds, when they shouldn't. Not sure that makes a difference but I suspect so.

Pol, it's ok with me if they can see through them.....as long as they aren't allowed to shoot through them at the same time.

Hey Pol,

I like the sound of 5,5,4,5,5 but I'm curious now why you are running 8GB ram. Are you running Vista 64 bit? I had 4GB ram running Vista 32 and my system actually slowed down when I upgraded to a 1GB video card, I assume because of problems trying to address over 4GB of memory. I dropped my ram back down to 2GB and everything actually ran smoother.

Hellshade yep Vista 64. I wouldn't bother going to a new 32 bit OS for no benefit.
Only benefit of V64 for me is more memory and DX10 otherwise I wouldn't bother to be honest.

Pol,

I would upgrade to V64, but at this point I figure I might as well wait until Windows 7 comes out. I don't think Vista has much of a shelf life, to be honest. The only reason I got it was for the DX10 to play on Age of Conan. Well, AoC didn't ship with DX10 support as promised and I quit the game because on-line MMORPGs are too big a time sink. (hard to have a family life AND play games that don't have a pause button).

Anyways I'd have been better off sticking with XP...unless a certain group of Devs decides to put DX10 support into their WWI Flight Sim. Just kidding! :) I don't want to get shot for attempting to delay the shipping date.

I dunno Hellshade, from what I've seen of it so far, I think that's where it belongs. Preferably a good distance from any of my HD's :icon_lol:.

Question Now Is . . What's this Windows 7 gonna be ?

I'm pulling for XP that supports 80RAM . .:bs:

Rumor has it that you need a supercomputer to run Vista 7 :costumes:.
