P3D V4+ - RFN French Carrier upgrade

Hi,
In these times where MSFS takes all the lights, the RFN team still works on naval operation simulation trying to resume and release our open projects.
The 1st of the list is an upgrade of our French Carrier "Charles de Gaulle"!
In this V2.0, you'll find a P3D upgrade of the ship with enhanced flight deck rendering, dynamic lights, configuration gauge, etc.
You'll have also two versions of the ship : the 2000ies area with Rafale and SEM and the current one (after 2018 rebuilt) with 100% Rafale and the USN IFLOLS mirror.

I hope you'll enjoy this release!
The next releases will be the Crusader with full wing workloads and Tacpack features, and then after, a complete rebuilt for P3D of the EtendardIVM/P!

Regards,
S.

Wow, beautiful done! Crg! :applause:

Fingers crossed! Please fix also this " :pop4: " every second near the ground ;). Thx!

Fabulous news, Sylvain! Not going anywhere near MSFS2020 anytime soon, so I'm thrilled your team is still supporting this platform.

After the slated payload versions of the F-8 are finished, is there still a chance of an RF-8 .... :biggrin-new:

Take care!

Woaah - simply excited! Thank you so much for this gift in a current parched P3D period...:applause:

Sylvain,
wonderful news - thank you very much for still supporting us. As I will never be going anywhere near MSFS2020, it is great that P3D still has the great RFN team around,

The RFN carrier gauge can be installed using add-on.xml
But, if a previous version is installed, the corresponding files and folders should be completely deleted.
The version 5.2 allows you to have indications on all ILS.
You will find it here :

Ohh, RFN gauge 5.2 is ready :)? 3 days ago I installed 5.0, Im downlaoding now. TY :applause:.
Can I use my old "RFN_Carrier" settings?

Yes, you can backup your own RFN_Carrier.xml and RFN_Parameters.xml for using it in the 5.2.

Ok, got it, what is the difference between models of FLOLS and this new one IFLOLS?

Many, many thanks for this Sylvain! :)

I'm really happy RFN addons continue to be updated.

There is one additional function I'd like to request though. I don't believe anything with such functionality has yet been released, but please correct me if I'm mistaken...

It would be great if the gauge could be used to turn the carrier/fleet into wind please, i.e. such that the maximum wind is blowing "down the angle" of the flight desk, as in real life. At the same time the carrier/fleet would speed up from their cruising speed (e.g. ~15 knots) to their maximum speed (e.g. ~30 knots), once again to maximise the wind blowing "down the angle". In other words the carrier/fleet could be called to "flying stations". The reverse could also be done, such that the carrier/fleet falls out of flying stations and resumes original course and speed.

Depending on which app one uses for carriers this can be done "by hand" using one's judgement regarding what the wind direction is likely to be vs. the angle of the deck etc.(and back again once flying is complete), but having a simple button in the RFN Gauge (e.g. Flying Stations On/Off) would make it so much easier and realistic.

As it happens such a thing has already been developed, but never actually released. Phil of Bravo Zulu (formerly Flying Stations) programmed an addon for such many years ago and I believe he may still tinker with it now and then. I was fortunate to be allowed to try it. Although it needed polishing it radically improved my carrier flying experience!

If it, or something like it with similar functionality, could be integrated with the RFN Gauge in some way it could make a lot of people very happy (even if they don't realise it yet!).

Hi Airtrooper
For having the wind in the runway axis you can proceded manually with RFN gauge ou automatically with vLSO.
With the RFN gauge, have a look in the left lower corner of the gauge.
You will see an information called WoD
It is the wind on the deck (see pdf page 15).
So if the boat is 25 kt velocity, you can put a wind 30° left the course of the boat for 10 kt.
Look at the WoD and ajust heading (or speed) of the wind.
Otherwise, in the documentation folder you can obtain all in the RouteAvia_VentSurPont_2.xlsx file.
Is that helping you?

Hi Andy,
This feature would be very handfull, I totally agree with that!
But to my own point of view, the RFN Gauge is not the best way to manage it.
Moving Carrier ship are inserted by two different ways : traffic bgl or AI Carrier.
In the 1st case, you need to find a way to overwrite the AI traffic "flight plan"... I dont' know how to proceed neither if it is feasible...
In the 2nd case, you need to manage escort ships in the same time and the RFN Gauge doesn't identify these AI ships... So far, I consider that the best way to have a "Wind on the deck" management feature, should be to enrich AI Carrier tool.
The source code is available but it is in .Net and I don't have any skill on that... So I f any one around here have some knowledge, I guess it would be a very nice improvement!

Sylvain

Michel (or Sylvain), could you contact me,

I have some ideas on this problem. A gauge included in the aircraft carrier which calculate the "best road" according with the wind direction is perhaps a solution to study.
Other approach, in a flying network, a person can be devoted to theses tasks: driving the Aircraft Carrier according to the meteo conditions.

I have worked 30 years in this domain (Marine Electronics for French Navy), and this is something interesting to do.
Algorithm "Curve of the dog" : https://mathcurve.com/courbes2d/poursuite/poursuite.shtml which permit to adjust the speed and trajectory of the boat ont the parameters of the wind. (smooth direction modifications)
We use this algorithm to allow the guns/ to follow an aircraft or missile target

Further to my previous post, it seems my memory was sketchy and the original Beta of the Flying Stations "Add On" (32-bit IIRC) was released to all (way back in 2013) and was called OEU. Although the Flying Stations website and forum no longer exist the latter is still available to read via TapaTalk, so you can read all about it here:

https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/flyingstations/flying-stations-add-on-t367.html

What is written there by Phil does a much better job than my explanation above!

I contacted Phil almost a year ago now (end of March 2020) and he provided me with an updated (64-bit) version to try.

The *.ship files work really well (very easy to edit, or create from scratch for new vessels) and having a carrier/fleet fall into flying stations... and back again... all whilst sailing a route (which was persistent over days or even weeks)... at the click of a button (no judgement, calculations or manual manipulation required) was fantastic!
