Paint vs. Environment

The blistering Arizona sun may keep rust to a minimum but it wreaks havoc on paint.

Sigh.

Maybe, Kevin, but North Sea gales and salt didn't do much either.

Here's the Duxford Shack - 5 years ago !

(Anyway, you can nip over to Arizona with your spray kit - I'm sure you'd be welcome ???)

Maybe I should erect a hangar? For both!

The Paphos Shacks are not fairing too well either. Here is WL747 from a few years back. Not sure how they are doing now.

Gosh, just found this pic of WL747 & 757 (and one orphaned Flamant) dated July 2007. They are slowly dying. Oh the pain...

Demolition by neglect - the ban of many transportation museums, who keep their collections outdoors.

There is much talk in the Railway Preservation field about getting museum pieces under cover on a piece of property that is paid for; even it if means scrapping the worst candidates. After 20, 30, even 40 years and longer of being outdoors with little or no maintenance; anything will look shabby in any climate. Much of this stuff as been in "preservation" as long or longer than it was operational.

Shackleton? Who said Shackleton?

That this rare bird was scrapped is a national disgrace.

Best wishes
Steve P

Sadly theres not much that you can do to prevent paint fading, especially in sunnier climates. The key is to make sure the prep is as good as you can afford and, some paints have better resistance than others but it depends on the colour you need. Then its just a case of monitoring and cleaning occasionally, and where any paint starts to flake get it re-treated and touched up before any corrosion can set in, the priority is to keep the airframe safe from corrosion. Re-painting is cosmetic and can be done when time/resources/MONEY allow.
