Painter's Advice For Ships...

Greets, I am attempting to add some wood deck look to Phil Crowther's Liberty Ship. Problem is, the color added to the deck only shows in the sim at a far distance. (LOD maybe?) When I fly alongside das boot the deck reverts back to the camo grey. :icon_eek: Could someone please give me an idea of what is possibly going on here? I've attached a picture of the .bmp the color was added to. Thanks In Advance

At a distance is the ship completely grey?

If so it could be that the lods were made using material texture and not a .bmp.

regards Collin:ernae:

When I'm not sure of part texture placement on the .bmp I copy the bmp, rename the old one to "'blah'.bac", paste the copy into PSP7 (or equivalent), and put yellow diagonal stripes about 100 pixels apart onto the copy and save it as 256 colours bmp.

This will show you where or how the deck is picking up the texture. If no stripes on the deck then its material texturing.

regards Collin:ernae:

Well, I did as you suggested and none of the stripes showed up at a close in view. Guess this means a try in Martin's Mdlmat proggy. Thanks for the tips Collin.

Some progress. Found the entry for material texturing thanks to Martin's program. I'm not sure what would be a proper color for the hatch covers. Any suggestions...were these usually steel plate? Any time frame pictures do not help much because they are B/W.

Hatches are covered with tarpaulin to keep the spray out, try a light to medium grey.

Well I went with Collin's suggestion. The major reason being that when you fly in on it and the ship goes through the different LOD's, too many different colors gave a kaleidoscope effect in the sim. I borrowed Jaxon's hull .bmp and gave it a red waterline also. I would think that since the changes were made in the .mdl I'll need to get permission from the author before uploading it. After that I'll throw it up for whoever wants it, for you cannon fodder maniacs out there. :icon_lol: :tgun2:

Kinda strange that the LOD models would be mapped differently except perhaps accidently. My guess would be that a new or tweaked main model was added & texture mapping was unintentionally omitted. Of course Iwould never make a boo-boo like that !

Beautiful D, ...

Lookin' forward to it.

Any chance, ...while you're in there, ...to ship the hoist booms, ...a-la Wolfi's "Hog_Islander_b.mdl"

Just askin', ...I'd give ya 'till the end of the day to finish it...

Thanks D.

That sounds very possible OW. This ship had it's origin in FS9. Usually not too many multi LOD's mdl's from that particular sim. I found out that in the picture of my first post the decking on the right applies to one lod, and the one to the left...another...closer in. The final one takes nothing from either of these...the fully detailed version. In a way that's a good thing for all of us tinkerholics here in the basement. Otherwise where is that fealing of Victory. :icon_lol:

Yea BD, when I went to skin this one I was thinking about what you had written earlier...about a way to differenciate the Liberty Maru from the U.S.model. So my thought was U.S.= stell plate deck, Japanese = wood deck. Something obvious from a view inside the cockpit.
On the ships hoist boom, do you mean being stored in the vertical position or the color? Was a long day today and just want to make sure I'm reading correctly. :blind:

...That would be stowed in the vertical position, ...in transit.

Thanks D.

Nope...sorry BD, that's beyond my meager skills. R G B values are easy enough to find but all the other code....:isadizzy:
