Pay no attention - just needed to vent

After witnessing three flights in a row where Jasta 19 got wiped out* by Nieuports I finally had a really good flight. I was stalking some single-seat Strutters (aka target drones), shot down two in flames and after much cajoling, bribery, threatening and frequent use of the A-key finally got another flight member to take heart and shoot down the last one.

All was well and I took my flight home and landed safely as I have now done I suppose over fifty times. Then my Alb fell over at close to zero speed and I died. He was my longest living pilot which I had invested ca eight hours real time in and he was going to get his first five kills confirmed.

I have a slight inclination to vent right now. From now on I'm cheating. It's can't die option ticked and DiD probably won't be tried again real soon. Thanks for including the option to play as an immortal.

* Just because they crash and burn doesn't mean the pilot's died. At one time there were six or seven Alb-shaped craters but only one pilot died. I'm definately getting away from playing campaigns with Albs against Nieups as the Nieup AI beats the Alb AI far too easily for my liking in my game.

You should ressurect him (and that's exactly one reason why I argued the pilot files should be left unencrypted).

Ok, sure, it's possible the pilot had a genetic malformation of his skull, which left it eggshell thin, and smashed it open when he hit his head against something as his plane fell over sideways at 10mph...but c'mon. :icon_lol:

We know the sim has anomolies, just as any sim does, but that doesn't mean one has to see a whole lot of time invested go straight down the pan when one rears it's ugly head.

The trick is knowing where to draw the line. But I suppose you can present your case to the community and take a straw poll, simple majority of those who express an opinion to decide the pilot's fate.

For me, I give my thumb...UP! (Have you retired [buried] him already...?).

People die from all sorts, even falling over in the street.. it's war it's hell. Maybe from the cold, maybe from the bullet hole you didn't feel from the intense cold and doped up on alcohol.

You have plenty of options to play with.. so nothing more to say.

A sad anecdote, true story BTW, the Missus' brother in law shot himself in the shoulder with a .25 automatic (to get attention I guess) when her sister left him and took the baby. The bullet ricocheted off a bone and went through his heart. Life's a b**ch and the cards will fall where they may. Salute!

After a good nights sleep I feel a lot better. Just to make a few things very clear:

1. The manner in which he died was entirely realistic. I have no issue with that. A gust of wind at the wrong time, a piece of faulty equipment, poor landing skills, holes in the ground, ice or water on the ground ...

2. I know I complain a lot about how the Alb AI fails against the Nieup. Both FM's are absolutely perfect in my mind. Since my attitude to playing is trying help my squadmates survive and score their crashing sometimes gets under my skin which certainly is no fault of the developers.

3. I absolutely love this sim. The frustration of that first post, I hope, should be seen in the light of me getting deeply immersed in its world.

Now then. Anyone for a jolly singsong?

Hey, GEIER,
Yesterday, I lead my flight of three Albatros D II south of Arras. We encountered 5 Bristol Scouts, and I decided to attack. I climbed before, to get the advantage, and they only "saw" us, when we came down on them.
Quickly I had two shot up seriously, then I helped my wings. I was just in the perfect position to shredder the third, when suddenly - BOOF! - explosion. Falling out of the sky. End.
I pressed "pause" quickly, to check, what had happened. A British plane had rammed mine (left hand drivers, I say! Lol!)

We can, after that, get really upset about the unfairness of death!
An advantage, the real pilots of World War One didn't have...

I'll start a new one today, and tell him to OPEN HIS EYES a bit wider!

PS: the Albatros D II should do quite well against Nupes. Avoid tight turnfights; get out and back in and shoot them up - those, who attack your wingmen, first. It can be done!

I think the early Albatros DIII is the far superior plane compared to the Nieup 17. Even with my horrid shooting I can take on two or even three by myself. This is not "the problem" (actually, there isn't really a problem). "The problem" is that my wingies are completely unable to use their superior planes against the Nieups. The Nieups do their acrobatic numbers and the Albs go lower and slower until they stall and crash. This does not happen against ANY other enemy AC that I've seen, not even the Pup which is otherwise a similar plane to the N17.

What I'll do is follow Olhams advice above plus use the A-key a heck of a lot more from now on, even in the middle of dogfights. It might well be that my kette are using some "Defensive" AI that stops them from attacking with any zest. This is Jasta 19 flying against The French near Nancy, April 1917.

Wow Geier, I've never witnessed anything like that. Maybe you shouldn't get your group so "sauced up" before going out on patrol! :) Yeah, hitting the A key might help a bit. One question though....have you selected one of the enemy craft before you hit the A key? Might make a difference if you haven't.
My main beef with my wingies is they let me expend all my ammo bringing down an enemy, and then they swoop in for the last 2 shots and steal him from me right before he hits. ARRRRGGGGGHH!! Go find your own!! Hehe...I've never been so close to shooting down one of my own squadmates as when that occurs. Its realistic though....my guys are competitivel.

ZZ.

CamelJ- To your point, saw a fellow once, shot in the forehead with a .25 or .32 can't recall; bullet apparently rode around his skull under the scalp, never penetrated bone, and was removed..fate..

Hey, ZoomZoom
When you shot up most of a plane, it should still be your claim.
I had the same situation; another wing shot it down finally, but I was allowed to claim it! So, don't give up - it depends on, who did the deadly hits. (Perhaps improve your shooting).
Cheers; Olham
