Last Thursday I started a job at a local produce processing plant. Enough fruit and veggies are processed each day to feed 2 million people. It's not hard work, just fast paced, repetitive stuff. I haven't worked since November 2007.....it sure feels good being out in the work force again and earning some money.

Last night I was put to work on the hardest job on the fastest packing line in our department. Dumping.....taking boxes of produce off of pallets, dumping the produce onto the packing table, breaking down the boxes and stacking them on pallets. Usually the supervisor assigns this post to one of the younger guys....but last night he put my 42 (will be 43 on Sunday) year old, 285 pound butt in that position. Either he likes me as a worker and had confidence that I could do the job....or he hates me as a worker and was trying to kill me.

In 7 hours, I handled TONS of red, orange and yellow bell peppers. Not sure exactly what the figure is.....I know how many pallets of each color I dumped...but not sure of the weight of the peppers in each box....it's either 25 or 50 pounds. If each box holds 25 pounds of peppers, then I handled 22 thousand pounds of peppers. If each box holds 50 pounds of peppers, then I handled 44 thousand pounds of peppers.

After an hour or so of slinging those boxes of peppers....the exact weight of each box becomes irrelevant....they simply feel HEAVY. I was butt tired by quitting time....and sore as all get out today.

Oh....I'm not 285 pounds any more....I've dropped 10 pounds in a week. 275 and on my way back to 225 (which is the weight were I look and feel the best).

Hey All,

Just out of high school I spent a summer working on a fruit and vegies farm. Besides moving irrigation pipe, picking canteloupe, harvesting cherries - one job I did was put 5 lbs of sugar in every 25 pound can of cherries that came by when we were processing them. Talk about repetitive but I enjoyed it.

Good Luck with the job!

Tim, great to see your face (figuratively speaking) , you'll do fine, the cream always rises to the top :salute:

OBIO,.........good seeing you posting again. You had us worried for awhile:icon_lol:! Anyway,...without a doubt the hardest job I held was working as a part-timer, apprentice butcher at a regional chain grocery store back in the 60's. Nothing comes close to butt dragging oneself home at the end of the day like this job did. Especially when there was a weekend steak sale going on. Even though I worked the counter wrapping and scaling/labeling the meats,...plus dealing with the ultra picky women customers,...there was hardly any let up. As a 'part-timer',...it was expected of you to put in extra time before and after official working and closing hours. No complaints though,...I was thankful for the job
Could my carcass handle the job today?..............doubtful.

Hey there. Sounds like starting at UPS, where one may expect to get in fight'n trim in no time lifting weights all day and night. I know I got that way doing produce like you are. Never forget the time the guys had me unloading off a semi and laughed their butts off as I took a few hundred pounds of melon on a hand truck down the ramp-me first. When the wheels hit the ramp I got knocked on by keester but good.

OBIO,

Nice to see you still checking in; I miss not seeing that dog avatar all over the forums....:mixedsmi:

Good luck with the job, OBIO. (Still waiting to re-do Ito's P5M with you)

Sounds like these are your salad-days! :icon_lol::icon_lol::icon_lol:

Hey there Tim!

Good to hear from you again! Hang in there, it'll get easier as your body readjusts back to the daily grind. Been there, done that! Keep us updated!

Hmm, worst job? I started out in a poultry processing plant. Starting position was hanging chickens; you have cage of maybe 12 to 20 chickens, reach in and grab one by the feet, swing around and place one foot in each ear of hanger. They don't like this treatment, of course, and they let you know by buffeting, pecking and SH**Ting all over you. Got real good at it though. Made a raise after only 3 weeks. After chicken season came turkeys. I din't do so well with those; some of them were bigger than I was at the time. I only weighed about 135 lbs at the time.

:guinness: :pop4:

Good to hear from you, Tim. Glad to hear the job is going well. My first of only two jobs in my life involved working in a warehouse while in high school. One spring day a buddy and I unloaded a 50' boxcar full of swamp coolers. They weren't heavy (50-60 lbs.) but they were big and bulky, so the trick was to slide them around or ease them down from above so they didn't land too hard. I don't remember how long it took, but 44 years later, I remember it being a blast. It's the only thing involving that job that I really remember and it still brings on a smile.

Just remember that you're making deposits in the old memory bank that will serve you later.

Good luck, my friend,

Bob

Great To Hear from You Again

It's great to hear from you and the job is working out. Soon you'll look like the Incredable Hulk. I spent 43 years and three months working at an oil refinery and was in the best shape of my life other than 6 years as a Combat Engineer in the Army Reserve.
So go get em Tim and best of luck.Keep in touch.

Another example of fruits and veggies doing their bit to help a guy lose weight, lol.

Good Luck with the new job!

A benefit of a more "physical" job is - at least what I experienced and alltough it makes you tired - it often keeps your mind free for other things. Suffering from high mental pressure and information overload in my job, I hardly feel like anything anymore when I´m at home, even simming becomes a mental challenge recently with the pressure growing each day.

And losing weight is also a good deal, to keep in balance you can now eat much more yummy stuff than before;-)

Best wishes!
Alex

Tonight was a short night....4 to 8:30. Was nice getting off early...gave Deb and I a chance to get out together and do some browsing and birthday shopping (for me....I'm officially 43).

As we were waiting to clock out, Juan (the supervisor) informed us that orders are up up up up up and that midnight quitting time is no longer a guarantee. In fact, he said midnight would be an early quitting time for a number of weeks. He is looking for us to be working 10 to 14 hour days, 6 days a week....with the 7th day of work as needed to fill orders.

Going to suck working that many hours...but the paychecks will be fat and the checking account will grow mightily.

Great to see you working again.
