I have looked and looked at pictures of radial engines for years.....being a big fan of round motors. And while I can not say with a 100% certainty without actually getting my hands onto examples of all the engines I have looked at pictures of....I would say that the exhaust headers/collectors were of either nodular cast iron or heavy gauge steel pipe/tubing that was cut and welded into shape. I have seen pics of radials with headers/collectors that, for all appearances, look like nodular cast iron pieces. And I have seen pics of radials with headers/collectors made from heavy gauge steel tubing. It really depends of the particular engine in question and the country of origin. The bulk of the pics I have seen of US radials shows a strong lean toward the welded tubing type collectors, while radials from Europe tend to lean toward the cast collectors. There are some variations in this...due to time frame and application. For your purposes, which I am assuming would be for one of Milton's AVIA projects....I would lean toward nodular cast iron...which would turn a nice brownish color with prolonged exposure to heat.....exposure to oil onto the header/collector while hot would result in a darker brown-black color.
