Pfalz DIIIa

Baywing

My Jasta was just given the presumably new Pfalz DIIIa's to fly and I see there is something attached to the center of the top wing that looks like a magnifier. I'm assuming that it is a gunsight magnifier as it looks like it swings down and would be in just about the right position. Assuming that is what it is, I can't seem to find a command to get it into place. Is there a command to swing it down (and, of course, the alternate command to swing it back up)?

No, it's a mirror, BAYWING, to see, if someone's at your tail. Unfortunately, it doesn't work yet as such - maybe in Phase 5?...
Must be tricky for the graphics departement.

I don't think so, if it were, I'm sure I'd see my own tail. Then again anything is possible....

Hello,
it is a mirror and it already works in Phase 2 - you need a good graphic card, tune up the sliders and it will work -at least that is what i hope in P3 ?

In real life the vibration would be such, that it would only provide the presence of dark blur, meaning 'somebody' is behind me. And such as I always try to have the sun at my back, for my attack, I wouldn't something glaring into my vision suddenly, I'd tear it off the wing. But that's just me!:wiggle:

BTW mirrors and dials only have a mirror finish on Nvidia last time I checked.

Really? Which slider would do it? I want a Pfalz!!!

You do not! By all accounts it is given to the Bavarian squadrons as some form of punishment.

Prussian snobbery aside, the Pfalz is a nice scout, but the mirror shows only green fields and blue sky on my system. It's too small to show any planes before the bullets give you more- pressing- warning. I'd stick to looking around if I were you. Still, take one up in QC.

Numerous fighter aircraft have been fitted with mirrors throughout history with the idea of giving the pilot a better view to the rear (most vulnerable quarter). For the most part given the reports of people that used them, vibration rendered the image in them useless. Additionally most pilots reported that by the time you saw anything in the mirror you were already well withing gun range, although they would allow you to see who killed you.

Okay, not so useful then?
Perhaps it's the plane for the ladies (WomenFly2?)
They could do their make-up in them! (Lol!)

Just seemed funny sticking up like it does. The few mirrors I've seen photos of are on Albatros and DVIII's and are faired into the upper wing. To stick one up into the airstream like the Pfalz has would seem foolish as it would shake all over the place rendering it useless.
Jasta 21 is flying Pfalz DIIIa's in March 1918. From what I have read, the DIIIa was a definate improvement over the Albatros, though it's rate of climb was less. It was much tougher in a dive and it took the Allies by surprize when it pulled out of dives that the Albatros wouldn't have. Having flown both (in BHaH) I can say the Albatros has a heavier feel, seems to have more power but the Pfalz turns better and dives great with an overall lighter feel. I have to keep some forward stick on the Albatros, but the Pfalz requires alot of back stick.

Not true. I had a mirror mounted on my Peitenpol AirCamper to see the front passenger and it also gave me a really nice view of the tail and behind me too. It did not vibrate in flight. Was no different then one in your car. This with the Model-A Ford engine hard mounted to the airframe.

The mirrors on my Harley vibrate more.

Cheers,

My $0.02: I'd rather have a mirror than a 'good luck teddy bear' as some pilots had!

Mirrors were fitted in various ways, sometimes two on the wing cut out or 1 like this.
