Photo of my FSX nightmare

Yeah, I've cranked the fans up. The weird thing about this whole gig is that my GPU temps are stable, and the lock ups are just fricking random. I can fly FSX for three hours with no lock ups, and then on another day have 2 or 3 lockups within the first 15 minutes.:faint:

What psu are you running, Bone? Could be that it's finding it hard to power the system. Have you tried running just a single card? :)

Is it just FSX?
Turn off any bios or software overclocking.
Take the card out and put it back in making sure its seated well. Blow out the case and check the vents and fans to make sure they are not blocked. Check the connections.
FSX morphs according to what plane, area, ect so some of my planes which can eat up memory can cause problems.
Your screen looks like a driver problem,a overclocking problem or even a hardware going bad indication.
Reload a known good driver and turn off all your vid card and bios changes so you know its not a software problem.

My PSU is an Antec TPQ-1000. I did run the rig with only one vid card for awhile, but it didn't make a difference.

This issue only exists with FSX. Although I don't have FS9 installed anymore, I did have it on this particular rig for 7 months, and it never locked up or CTD'd. Crysis, CFS3, LOMAC Flaming Cliffs, ect, have never affected the rig either.

Hmmm Have you tried starting with a fresh FSX config?

I would have bet money it was heat related...

Maybe do as someone else said earlier, reload the driver, after running driver cleaner and see....

The times I have seen that in FSX was always due to overclocking or especially fooling with bios ram settings.
Some people can get away with murder and make all kinds of bios, ram, ocing and FSX doesnt care.
In my case, any ocing or bios changes and FSX doesnt like it.
I would start there.

I'm still betting on the BIOS flash... this problem is EXACTLY what I was experiencing until NickN and EVGA steered me to P06 (they're up to P08 now)..

I suggested to get EVGA Percission and use it to run his fans as Mo also suggested Riva Tuner for the same..He has Percission, but never reported if he used it I think for any period of time to see......

Thanks for all the great input, gentlemen, it's greatly appreciated!

Harley, I have the fans running at 100% now, but it will take some time to see if it's a fix - being that the problem is so random. The path of least resistance starts with addressing the heat issue, and then I will move to some of the other suggestions.

When I boot up my rig the GPU temp is 72c, and with solid play on FSX it goes up to 80c...which isn't much of a variance, but temp is where I'm looking first. I suspect I'll be flashing the BIOS, since you've had the exact problem. I may even decide to flush this 780i board for an Asus Rampage and DDR3 memory.

Hi Bone,
I can recommend the ASUS Stryker II Extreme for use with a decent quad core and ddr3.
By the way I have a Nvidea 8800GTX in my spare machine and that never went above 70c under full load.

Mine idles at 56C, under FSX load it goes up to about 70C.

Have you checked the fan on the GPU? It could be sticking or be covered with dust.

He has them both running at fan speed 100% now to test....:wavey:

Here's a weird thing I'll share. Whatever it was that they "fixed" in the BIOS (they were well aware of our problem).. it's more of a work-around.. you can even see it in action.. It's like it WANTS to start messing up, but that condition is reckognized, and you get one, big mother of all stutters.. like it freezes for 1/2 second, and waits until the "issue" passes..

You know, it doesn't surprise me one bit. I've had a alot of trouble with this mobo over the last year (BSOD's, lock ups, file corruption, ect) and my opinion is none too high of the 780i. I think it's time to rip it out and let the neighborhood dogs crap all over it.

I thinks it time I go have a pint of Guiness :guinness:....cheers! And release the hounds!

I have never heard to much good about the 780i..

My wife had TWO die on her..An EVGA and a XFX..Both with no warning at all...Just no boot one day with a mobo full of codes...LOL

Can you say junk?

Good move :applause: .. I lived with it for a few months.. then when I cooked my Q6600 (dislodged the fan while it was running at 3.2ghz).. instead of just getting another Q6600 (they're dirt cheap now), I went ahead and used it as an excuse to get rid of the board, too.

A high-end i7 setup was still too expensive.. so I did some research and learned that a 45nm quad was pretty darn near i7 performance, and a LOT cheaper. I ended up with a Gigabyte P45 board, and a Q9550 (now running at 3.8ghz :woot: ) as a stop-gap, until i7 prices come down. It runs wonderfully !
