Photogrammetry/Non Cities

SOH-CM-2023
I was interested to see which cities have photogrammetry. These are a few I've located. U.S. photogrammetry capitols represent 80% of our capitols.
European cities have many interesting cathedrals, churches and buildings. It's been fun seeing parts of the world in this amazing sim.

The following are those I've found:

Portsmouth and Southampton in the UK also have photogrammetry.
Which aren't the first two that spring to mind if you're going to do it.

My current place in Aachen (Germany, very close to the Netherlands and Belgium border) is also represented with photogrammetry.

If Baton Rouge, LA is an example of MSFS photogrammetry, it doesn't say much for MSFS photogrammetry, The state capital building is horribly unrealistic. The Old State Capital isn't there. While LSU is there, I had to add a freeware Tiger stadium.

How does one tell whether it is used or not? Is it that photogrammetry cities have the actual buildings they should (correct colors, architecture, etc), but non-photogrammetry cities just have generic 3D buildings with the 2D footprint and more-or-less correct height of the one's they're representing? (For example, I've seen some sports stadia that look like oval donut shaped office buildings...)

Charlotte, NC has some good photogrammetry also.

While at the site, those of you who like to fly the mountains of the east, get this file, it is a constant work in progress and updates as he gets more done. It removes those horrible molehills and monolith ponds.

Yeah, I noticed that with the latest update, that, whoever their new vendor is who updated the database, it seems like sharp changes in color warp the altitude of small areas. For instance, I'm seeing a lot of parking lots that instead of being flat are now either large drumlins or bowls, just in the area of the parking lot. Also, I'm noticing a lot of missing buildings now that used to be properly handled by Azure to put in a building, as well as "photographic" (as opposed to photogrammetric) trees that are only in the texture, and not covered by 3D trees. And what's up with those pokey trees sticking up twice as high as the trees around them?

(The MSFS official site is reducing the color depth of screenshots, hence the banding seen here).

Flagstaff, AZ is photogrammetric

They covered the Capital Building in (photogrammetric) Concord, NH with trees! haha... I was wondering why I couldn't see it when I took off from R30 there, it's extremely prominent with it's gold colored top.

Around Patrick AFB there is a strange mixture of true PG buildings, flat images that should be homes and homes with roofs and no sides. That imagery extends along some of Coco beach. Perhaps the data was limited or faulty. Some cities are true to life and stunning.

San Fernando Valley can be added to the list of PG areas including Canoga Park, Van Nuys and several other communities.

Canoga park is of particular interest to me since it is where I rented a room in a home for my first job out of college. I worked for Rocketdyne, a division of North American Aviation where I tested rocket fuels at their test site in the Santa Susan mountains at the west end of the valley. Both the home and test site are recognizable in MSFS. Brings back memories of 1957.

Wow! I bet you have some great stories! :loyal:

Southampton and Portsmouth I believe.
Correct. But you can purchase the Orbx London Landmarks package in the Marketplace. It's currently the only payware I have, and I love it. It's easy on the frames and makes cruising down the Thames inbound to London City a very nice flight.

I have both that and their EGLC Tom, being a born and bred Londoner I bought them immediately on release, in fact I buy all their UK stuff on release.

I'm definitely looking forward to the UK update though, that and the VR one.
In general the UK looks great as long as you don't look too closely, there's definitely quite a few things that need fixing.
For example immediately south of the photogrammetry southampton in the Isle of White and the needles and their lighthouse at its westmost point are completely missing :(
