Well after a 6 month delay, work has finally progressed on my representation of the Coast Guard Air Station Port Angeles to the point at which I can release a beta version.

Features:
-3-D land model for peninsula (Ediz Hook)
-Many Buildings representd
-Photoreal ground
-HD taxiway, ramp and runway textures

But there still much more work to be done! :isadizzy:

It's nice to see your progression. And the beta.

Be'in your scenery is a beta, I sent in (my first photo-real beta repaint (on Nates Bell 407)), KIRO - Chopper 7 EYEWITNESS NEWS to have a look.

The detail in the buildings is very nice, and spot on for the aerial shot. Chopper 7 flew around the area and landed at several spots to check elevation.

Close to the main CGAS building the elevation was perfect. As I progressed and landed on each landing circle, and towards the end of the point, that's when the elevation changed significantly.

See Pics.

OleBoy,

did you copy the contents of the "scenery" folder into Flight Simulator 9\Scenery\World\Scenery? That file is necessary to change the elevation of the airfield. I actually forgot it at first and was quite baffled at the false "deck". Also, that dark border around the peninsula, I don't quite know why it is doing that, possibly a texture conflict in the "PortAngelesX.bmp" textures and the water texture.

Also, the 407 texture looks awesome, kudos on your first photo-real, my first ironically was a news chopper as well, I guess the colors are something that just screams for photorealism.

Thanks,

Dustin

Hi Dustin

Yes. I put everything as your Installation Instructions stated. I don't know if FS Global 2010 is causing the trouble, or Ultimate Terrain Canada/Alaska or what. I don't even know where to begin.

When I started the flight, the chopper was at/on ground level and seemed to be ok. As I zoomed out and rotated in a circle of the helicopter, that's when I noticed the deviation of the camera view as it dropped and stepped back up in the circumference.

Everything else seemed fine.

Thanks. I stayed away from close-ups so's not to tease. It looks dang good. But learning the paint kit to make things happen, that takes time. I'll perfect it.

And..........laughing....it is the colors.

Thanks,

My next guess would be that another AFCAD file is installed somewhere else and causing the elevation change to be ignored. You can use the AFCAD program to search and it will show if there are any "non-stock" airfields installed for KNOW.

Software bugs, ughh :a1451:

Feeling the same right now. AFCAD program? Dang it. I don't know what or how :kilroy:

You need to lead me by the nose :pop4:

After double checking, the flatten file that goes in the World/Scenery folder, was not in the World folder. My mistake. I placed the flatten file, then restarted. I still have the same scenario for the elevated runway.

Maybe someone else will respond to see if they have the same..

thanks Dustin,
I will go after this one immediately.
I live about 25 miles east.

if you don't mind a request,
how about John Wayne Marina at Sequim Bay?
I could sure use a spot to tie up my Beaver.
thanks again for PACGAS

Port Angeles

Great looking project!

My wife and I went out to an air show there back in 88 or 89 and had a great time. It'll be fun to look it over again. The big red roofed hanger looks to be perfectly reproduced.

If they ever have an air show there again, I'll have to link up with Smilo for a beer at the club there.

Downloaded it and have been having a blast. I wish more people would do US Coast Guard Air Stations, especially to this caliber! :)

If you ever feel like doing another CGAS, the one at Barbers Point, Hawaii does not exist for FS yet! :)

you're on

Airshow! What an awesome location for one. Question, what aircraft did they have there, have they ever brought a C-130 or aircraft of that size in? From what I can gather, fixed wing ops are rather rare.

Thanks,

Dustin

When I was a child there in the early '90s, the air station was strictly an HH-65 Dolphin base (and I think still is), and had very limited fixed wing activity, although the runway seems long enough to accommodate C-130s and they probably stopped by occasionally.
And just randomly, I also very vaguely remember a display visit from a Canadian CH-113 Labrador helicopter (basically a CH-46).
Besides this, the Air station also had a Coast Guard Cutter component with a couple of ships. (I am assuming you know this already since you modeled the docks.)

In regard to the addon scenery, is an option availalbe to remove the satellite coverage of downtown Port Angeles? I like having it on the immediate CGAS area (I guess around where the dark water border is in this beta), but I liked my existing autogen and default resolution detail for downtown. (no-offense)

Thanks for you work!

Yes, remove the 15_5144_11368.bgl file from the scenery folder. It's a very temporary representation of what will eventually be a full furnished Photoscenery (Autogen, seasons, etc). Personally i agree it looks bad, but I have not gotten around to improving it yet. Be warned though, that may cause problems out near the air station.

Oh, and thanks for the info, I did find a video of the Canadians landing a hovercraft on the beach there, so I kindof suspected they stop by.
