(Possible) Bug: Dying when Quick Combat is starting

I have a nasty bug or issue here: when I am going to Quick Combat and set the altitude setting different from 'field' then I die instantly when the cockpit view comes up after loading. The screen turns red and I get the message 'You have died' or 'You have been hospitalized'. This happens using different planes like Fokker Dr.I or Roland C.II 'Walfisch'. I did not try other planes though.

I did a reinstall but the problem persists. It does not happen when I am starting from the airfield. There I can start normal and fly normal.

After the first install I also noticed some weird thing: when choosing CFS3 Quick Combat from the Workshop then the game would load the airfield scene where the plane is standing there and the pilot is sitting or standing nearby. But the plane would explode several times until I had chosen to hit the 'Fly' button. I also could hear the exploding plane while looking at the loading screen. That was when I decided to do a reinstall.

Could the devs give me some advice what to do? I did not experience this with Phase 2 and I presume another reinstall would not be helpful?

Cheers

Wow starting QC from OFF Manager in the air should be fine something sounds screwed with the install Gremlin, never come across that launching a QC in the 39784775 times I tried it during testing lol. Could be something left over from P2 there, maybe like Capt Royce he first saw P2 stuff I think after he upgraded.

First check you are patched to v 1.1 (workshop, lower right)

Maybe try a new pilot, new squad.

If not, uninstall OFF via control panel Add/Remove and reinstall (if CFS3 is not fresh then do that too), then reinstall CFS3 + 3.1 patch, then OFF.

Are you running QC from workshops? This is purely for testing/setup and there may be circumstances where that happens - eventually this function will be removed.

You should be running QC from the main intro screen - Quick Combat.

Finally in Workshops check that the 'Direct to Mission' is set ON in User Interface section - left most column

Ok, to answer you both:

- I have patched to 1.1
- I was running CFS 3 QC from Workshops just some times, but normally I run QC from Main Menu
- As my pilots keep dying I create new ones, also I enlist on different squadrons: because of time constraints so far only Jastas with Fokker Dr. I and FA with Roland C.II.
- Before the first install of P3 I uninstalled CFS 3 and P2, deleted all remnants I could find in Registry, and restarted after that. Then I installed CFS 3 fresh (Ubisoft DVD, German language selected) and rebooted. I directed P3 to this CFS 3 directory when asked for the CFS3 disk. Rebooted after installation of P3.
- Before the second installation of P3 I deinstalled P3 only. Rebooted. But on new installation of P3 this time I directed P3 to the CFS 3 DVD when asked for it. The problem with the exploding plane in CFS 3 QC in Workshop was gone after that. But dying in QC via Main Menu was not.
- I left 'Direct to mission' checked as it was set by P3 already.
- I did not try Campaign so far as I am currently tweaking my settings thus I just hop into QC for seeing the results of my tweaking.
- When starting from field and taking off it is all normal, only starting in mid-air kills me. For a short glimpse I see my cockpit then the screen gets red and the field of vision narrows down until it is all red.

I do not know what another re-install would help but if you recommend it then I will do it. Takes only 12 minutes.

Hello,
i had something similar with phase2, but in campaign - as soon as i was at the field, plane and pilot visible, my plane would explode - and it happened again regardless what i did, only a re-install helped the problem.
If i remember right this was only happening once in a while when there was a scramble mission. I heard this ripping fabric sound and the plane exploded.
Only posting this to help - maybe there is a hint to why this happens, or what it is connected to.
Greetings,
Catfish

Cat,

that bug was squashed during development of P3. It's not the same as what Gremlin is seeing.

Did the OP fly a mission in CFS3 after the re-install before installing BHaH?? It wasn't mentioned, sometimes the little things.....

As we say we haven't seen that at all Gremlin and no one reported it. Full uninstall Via ADD/REMOVE is important.

Hello Gremlin - something is clearly very wrong as the bug you have is really so obvious that we would not have released with that behavior.

Please contact us on support@overflandersfields.com - quote your order number and you will be assisted to get this sorted!

Thanks Winder, I will try another uninstall and reinstall first before contacting you. Maybe it gets sorted by itself.

Catfish, thanks for the hint. Exactly what happens when I go into CFS 3 QC from Workshops. Reinstall seems the way to go.

James, that did not happen when I ran Phase 2 but now it is. I did not even know there was such a bug in Phase 2.

Maybe some weird constellation from German Windows XP Pro, CFS 3 install and OFF P3 install. It's on the exact same machine and OS install P2 was running on. But you never know. Billy Boy gave us tons of fun with his OS. I always say 'A computer helps solving problems we never would have had without it'.

Nope - Language Bug

Probably a solution:

As in old P2 times - i forgot to change the keyboard-language settings for windows - as it is mentioned on the OFF Homepage. So, easily change the German keyboard-layout in your windows settings to English/ US-Settings .

It may work, Braddoc

I believe all you need to do is make sure the "." is used for decimal symbol and the "," for thousand separator. I had this issue and I think it crashed when OC did not start at the aerodrome because it put the planes at 2.5 feet instead of 2500. I changed these at regional settings and all was well.

I had the exact same problem after installing the update. got horrible "BOOM" in headset then visual of a wing sticking out of the ground (several times) once a trashed EIII was recognizible. I did a complete uninstall/reinstall including 1.1 update and now it works fine. 'cept for the stiff neck and cramped joystick hand...

let me guess. its no lone wolf mission but with other wingman, and only when starting directly at some height. i think it is because you just appear in the theater with all other wingman in one pile and instantly you collide and crash, before you or anybody can form up some formation. i think it's the very same reason why i crashed couple times when warping with wingman. as soon as you get out of warp you are in a pile with all the others. autopilot and then warp was bit better, but i also crashed 2 times. so if you appear in QC directly in the air with others, it is probably the same bug like appearing after getting out of warp.

Greetings Capnrick,
This has occured everytime when I've started a QC from workshop. (solo combat) but I always get a commentary at the end that so and so is missing or KIA from a flight?.

QC from the main menu is fine, ie. in Cockpit at altitude, but I can't change the weather settings, I think this has something to do with the original Sqd. selection when creating a Pilot.

I'll follow the same (reinstall BHaH), I presume you only did a unistall for BHaH +1.1patch.
I'll keep you posted, apart from this small glitch, BHaH is a marvellous improvement from P1 & P2,

worth every cent Guys :ernae:

Gentlemen, we have a winner here :applause:

Thank you very much, Dimus.

After the third reinstall and some fiddling around this did the trick for my case. Winder, Pol, could you please note that somewhere thus people with (presumably) German keyboard layout may find this solution if encountering the same weird symptoms.

Or maybe a fix can be made.

Another thought occurred to me. Wasn't there an issue with the background task ctfmon.exe which was discussed in the forum before the crash? Or does memory lie to me?

Hi Gremlin,

Great glad you are running!
(gawd this is P1/P2 forum now have to move these posts). I suggested a similar tweak for someone else from Finland but don't know if it worked yet.

We internationalised P3 so you wouldn't normally need this tweak but obviously some combinations still do, so I'll add it to the FAQ. If it's fixable we will look into it after the current issues we are working on for V1.2 but for the moment you have a way forward.

Mark,

yes I have the way forward and I am very glad I did not have to bother your support department. I am just wondering why Phase 2 was running on the same system and Windows XP installation flawlessly without the above mentioned changes.

USE YOUR CONFIG TO DIABLE UI ANIMATIONS srry for shouting to lazy to change it

I had the same kind of problem.

I solved it by deleting the uisel.xml file in C:\user\USERNAME\appdata\roaming\Microsoft\Combat Flight Simulator 3.0
of the CFS3 installation used by OFF Phase3.
(same kind of problem as the 'mission file not found in CFS3)

Then relaunching the CFS3 (to recreate the file).

After that, I reinstalled OFF Phase 3 and the problem had gone.

Resetting OFF in the Workshop could also be a good idea for some problems.
