post cards from the south atlantic.

Ascension island is in the south atlantic, a volcanic mountain of the mid atlantic ridge
it is one of those places that is halfway to every where else.
For mariners of old, a place to catch turtles and goats, there is precious little water, it is a real desert island. A place to be marooned or shipwrecked.
In 1939 it became an important HF/DF radio station covering the trade routes.
In 1941 a United States Task Force built an airstrip there.
When they arrived, the defence force guarding the radio station, who had not been briefed about the americans coiming. Opened fire..
Fortunatly the mistake was realised before any harm was done.
Less than a year later in 1942 the first plane to land was a fairey swordfish from HMS Archer.
I think Archer had wireless problems and was bringing in signals about uboat movements in the south atlantic, for transmission from the radio station.
Once again the arrival was unexpected, this time the Americans opened fire on the britsh plane but once again the mistake was realised in time.

Now.
Captain Cranium has stolen a world travel airlines DC3 and whole bunch of landclass textures from FS9. And set forth to conquor the south atlantic for CFS2.

But, what is this verdant paradise we find at S7 58 W14 24 ?

An ideal candidate to practice scenery enhancement with Ground2k v4
and EZ-Landclass!

lets take a quick flight and see what he's been up to.

most of the island is sharp rocks plunging into the depths

fine white sand accumilates on the western shore,
sulpurous gas seeps out of the ground and supresses vegitation.

At the very top where the air is fresh some tropcal forest clings on.

The airbase has been levelled.
The captain tells me it took many hours, its like painting a picture and having to wait for the paint to dry.

Ground2k can be very unforgiving, it does not suffer fools, as I have learned, losing many hours work by rendering a project unopenable. So I have decided to really learn how to work it .

Ascencion is tiny, and so not too dawnting.

H.M.S. Hood's 5.5" Guns on Ascension Island

Here's summat else for you to ponder about.

Hi Colin,

That is very cool about the placing and restoration of the 5" guns from HMS Hood on Ascension Island.

Someone with scenery object building skills should make those so that simonu and place them. ;)

The aerodrome is known as Wideawake Airfield and was used in the Falklands War for the RAF's longest ever duration bombing mission when Avro Vulcans attacked the runway at Port Stanley airport.

Here's summat else for you to ponder about.

Cheers Collin, great link that little map of George town will help no end,
now,
I wonder if I know anyone who might have some 5 nahf inch guns like those on HMS Hood,
If they was exported from fsds2 as a CFS2 .mdl twould be better for converting to scenery library object.

That's right kdiver, Wideawake airfield, it's an evocative name.
Just over halfway from Britain to the Falkland Isles.
Wideawake to Stanley and back is still nearly an eight thousand mile round trip, . Thats
13 hours at Mach 0.97.
The bombing raid failed to disable the runway and the Argentinians had Pucaras in the air the following day. Expensive!
Vulcan
Ordered in 1947 as a high altitude bomber, prototype flew at Farnborough airshow in 1952.Nice looking bird, it must have been an awsome sight at the time.
Entered service in 1956 but the advent of supersonic interceptors and high performance SAMs
had already rendered high altitude bombing obselete.
Fortunately the designers had done a good job and the structure of the vulcan was sufficiently strong to endure low level missions.
