PRB's SW Pacific Shananigans

Just arrived at the American base at Barakoma, where there are a couple of US Marine Corps Corsair outfits based. They looked over my F4U-1A to make sure all was in tip top shape before we set forth on this great adventure. The only thing that worries me at the moment was when the crew chief mentioned that the arresting hook and catapult bridal attach points were in good shape, for a Kiwi Corsair... I'm supposed to get a flight plan for this shin-dig within hours... Willy, they got bombs here if you need some.

Dang it, forgot to fill up the Ensign Eliminator with gas. Must have been to much adult beverages at the part last night. Might divert to Rabaul.

Landed at Rabaul (AYTK), just to make sure. Probably could have made it to Kavieng, but it would have been kind of close on gas. Kodaks: 1) Tracking south of Green Island. I think this is the Island that Saburo Sakai saw out the window during his epic flight from Guadalcanal with a bullet lodged in his head. He used it as a visual waypoint on the way from Rabaul. Seeing it on the way home told him he was headed in the right direction, more or less. 2) Starting my decent into Rabaul just after crossing the long skinny island of New Ireland. 3) Turning final. A little high, but that's not a bad thing in a Corsair. This way I can see where I'm going... 4) Another ensign saved!

AYTK - AYKV. Off to find Kavieng. Shouldn't be too difficult. Just follow the long skinny island until it ends, then look down.

CPG - FIN

Had a fun flight across the Bismark Sea from Ka-Ving to Cape Gloucester (CPG). As I approached the coast of New Britian I could see the peninsula with the Wangore Bay at the end of it. That “feature” definitely looks volcanic... After that decided to complete the short hop to Finch-Haven (FIN). Willy was airborne over the Coral Sea for most of my flights tonight, and so the radio chatter ensued. Jumped over the Owen Stanleys to watch Willy's landing at Port Moresby. The kodaks show approach to CPG and FIN, and Willy's Douglas.

Cool pics, Austin. That looks like a nice place to watch airplanes from!
