well for a geek like me anyway, http://members.tripod.com/airfields_freeman/CA/Airfields_CA_SacramentoNE.htm this is for the dirt runway that was at the top of the ridge above where i live. Skyridge airport,Auburn,Ca,if you click the link, its the top most set of pics and charts, along with text,Dan Shivley was our local (Sacramento) news pilot hero,he flew KOVR-3 bell 206 for many years until retirement.i have no idea where he is now..but he was a great pilot, and got great shots.
in the top chart, where it shows the chatolic sisters school, thats still there, mater of fact they are doing a huge addition to it,putting an accual hotel like building for the sisters to come to have a "retreat"...its open to members of the church as well..but you have to be a devout member...its mostly all elderly nuns there. just up the road with the red dashed lines, that is "sacramento street"..once known as the folsom highway..only a narrow two lane road, twisty and mean, off that red and white dashed street is a small street that goes to the right..or to the east if you are a mappy..that is Carolyn st,at this time, the street crosses sacramento st,and deadends into rancho circle which is where i live.sort of between the BM 1279 and the three little black dots.if you scroll down to the last aireal photo from 2004 taken by Dan,you can see how the river canyon begins to fall off to the east..just out of the frame ,it becomes about a 75% gradient, well if you look at a mechanical drawing triangle, you stand it up,you have a flat bottom,90% on the back,60% on the front..and this would be at about 75% or degrees on one of those triangles if you were to draw a straight line..lol..in the very upper right of the photo.you can see a scar of dirt that appears to just be an embankment..thats accually apart of the raceway for the Auburn Dam they were going to build.when i was a kid,i moved to this nieghborhood in 1969,we would go up to the area just south of where the morman church is now, they had built huge mounds of DG,my dad said that Greely had the runway DG mostly scraped clean ,piled in thses mounds to use later as ditch lining, this ofcourse was before my working days..but my dad and grandfather worked with Greely Harrington for many many years laying sewer and water lines all over placer and nevada counties, its very rocky here and mostly "lavacap" so the pipes have to be "lined" with either DG or sand..they prefer DG because it will compact better than sand.Greely also loaned my dad the money to buy/build his house we live in now, because the banks wouldnt..as it states in the text on the website.."wrong side of the tracks"..no one..even in the 1970s ever thought this area would be a viable developed area....and in a way they are right..cept what homes are out south of me are owned by guys like Scott Pruett ( from chip gannassi racing)scott owns a huge vinyard just about a 1/4 mile south of me,,Col Bud Anderson lives out there...John Travolta had a house there for a time..but ,and i dont mean this racistly on my part..they is a Rez just down the road from me as well..and those people on "THAT OTHER side" of the tracks believed for many ears the REZ would hold back this area.......well lookie now...the Native Americans from the REZ are all multi millionairs from the thunder valley casino..and the snobs in town are losing theyre presous olive orchard.....ok..im not bitter..nope..nope...:icon_eek:

It is a very cool site. This got me interested in how fields looked from the air so I started looking for 'ghost' WWII fields in the UK and Italy from Google maps. Once my eye got accustomed to what to look for, I could just drift across the landscape until I would spot the shapes lingering under a farm field or town.
