Hi all,

When I try to install FS2002 for the 1st time on my MSi Windows10 laptop from the downloaded 3-cd version (Microsoft Flight Simulator 2002 (USA) (Professional Edition) using setup.exe I get this message after accepting installing using the normal path (C:\Program Files (x86) etc. etc.)

"could not verify installation media"

and after that I can only cancel the installation.

Suggestions welcome,

hertzie.

Dont install using the normal path!! Use C:\FS2002 or something similar.
Run the exe or setup in compatibility mode. Maybe as Administrator as well.

Having read the small print on FS2002 requirements, which gives it compatibility for Windows 98, 2000 & Windows XP.
So I doubt very much if you can get FS2002 running in Windows 10 without additional emulating software.

Hi zswobbie1, I did all of that and maybe more. No results.

Thanks for your interests,

Erik.

Because Windows 10 does not recognize older Discs using SafeDisc DRM. It's the same issue with those trying to Install FS9 on a WI10/11 computer.

Check at the 'other' FS Sites for Tips on how to Install FS2002/2004 in Windows 10.

hertzie:
To me it sounds like the 3rd CD isn't what the install is expecting. Maybe the CD/ISO has been damaged/change so the setup doesn't know what to do.

ViperPilot2:
FS2002 is using SafeDisc during the install? I installed FS04/FS9 from the 4 CD just fine with Win10 and strikes me as odd that MS would use SafeDisc during the install just for FS02 as MS didn't for CFS2 before FS02 and FS04 that came later and yes CFS2 also uses SafeDisc on it's main exe.

The whole row about SafeDisc started with Win 8 and a certain Windows Update that effectively disabled SafeDisc to where FS2002/2004/CFS and CFS2 would not Install...

SafeDisc effected FS00/CFS2/FS02/CFS3 and FS04. I was able to install FS00, CFS2, CFS3 and FS04 from CD just fine. Needed a updated .exe to run them after the install.

I'm trying to remember how I got FS2002 to install, it was a long time ago (2015?).

With Win10, usually give it a couple of days and you would get a "mystery update" that allowed it to install.
I do seem to remember that it wouldn't auto-install and I had to click (right click?) the install routine while the first disk was loaded, that stuff about Admin mode sounds familiar.

There is still the issue of finding the right version of FSIUPC to install, assuming you get FS2002 loaded onto your drive.
Most of FSIUPC's functions work, but some won't.

I don't remember having any issues with emulation software. Microsoft just had to be reminded that they sold the OS and the flight sim.

FWIW, I still have FS2002 on my drive but I rarely run it. Parts of it (skybox, day and night effects) I still consider superior to FS9. Still, I've called FS2002 the red headed step child of the FS family for a good reason. :sneaky:

zswobbie might remember from back when we posted in the flightsim.com forums, but I'm pretty sure I mentioned how to install FS2002 in Win10.
Finding those posts will probably be tough, I posted at FS.com as "bob seaman" if that's any help.
hertzie, once you do get it running hit me with a private message/conversation. I "back dated" a bunch of FS9 aircraft so they would work in FS2002. Things like wheel brakes and alarm "trips" (stall and overspeed) would have to be edited in the aircraft.cfg and the .air files.

OK, last night I finally got it running, but my scenery path is not good. Working on it. And did sleep well haha.

If it helps, I'm running Win10-64 bit.
My FS2002 install is located in Program Files (X86)>Microsoft Games. I have Admin set and I'm running Win XP service pack 2 compatibility settings.
Did you install everything? Its been a long time, but I seem to remember FS02 wanting to do a minimal install where most of the scenery stays on the CD. There should have been a FULL install option. Make sure you used that. Or, keep loading CDs and try re-starting FS02.

Open the main FS2002 folder. You should see the regular FS folders (just like FS9) and a whole bunch of mystery files under the folders. On my set up, I see a bunch of 3 and 4 character file names. These files have no extension and you should be seeing the following:

0
1B07
1CC8
1FA
etc..
EDIT- Don't panic if you don't see the "mystery files". I just remembered that I installed FS Traffic back when it was payware. Its long since gone extinct. These files might be FST traffic areas. There's a bunch of them.

Check your (normal FS9) scenery locations (scenery and texture folders) and see if anything's there.

Hi zswobbie1, I consulted my PC-guru and he said I should download and install the program WinCDEmu, which I did. Using that program I managed to open disk1 and it gave me the chance to start the exe. ( it asks you what you want to do with the contents of disk1). So I started the exe. and it began to install FS2002 for 42%. Then asked for disk 2, but I didn't manage to get that working. That meant that I had to cancel the installation, but I had opened my C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\FS2002 and had seen that almost all the necessary rootfiles were in it. So I did a 2nd attempt and when the installation asked for disk 2 I closed my Win10 and did a restart and saw that all the necessary files were still in the FS2002 folder. Then I opened my disk 2 and disk 3 and copied everything necessary in the FS2002 folder. Then I started the FS2002.exe as administrator and got the eula and accepted and it started, but giving me about 50 messages about missing scenery, so I had to rework the scenery.cfg and to open all the .cab-files to get rid of that. So now it works fine in Win10. But now the next problem is showing: I wanted to install NL2000v2 (that is an old version), but the exe. of that cannot find my FS2002, though it is installed using the custom path.

So, if you think or say that there is "a stich loose" (Dutch expression) with me you maybe right (lol)

if you are writing about NL2000 v2.9 as available from flightsim f/l library for FS2002/4, there are instructions for manual install in the included manual; in my case, likewise, the exe, couldn't find the path for the FS2004 path either in Win10 (as I had copied and pasted the default FS2004 from my XP install, and my FS2004 is not registered in the Win10 registry), but I managed to install NL2000 v2.9 along with service packs/updates successfully, upon following the instructions in the manual; should be just the same for FS2002!

cheers!

Thanks for sharing. It's always interesting to hear how people make a plan & shoehorn their beloved sims into modern day hardware & software.
Yep, you cannot keep a good simmer down! :wiggle:

Hi wolfebee89, tried that but does'nt work. The NL2000v2 WANTS to see FS2002 first and does'nt give a possibility to choose another path.
