problem installing RS

Pat Pattle

SOH-CM-2025
I've just installed RS onto my latest PC. If I choose anything but Pearl I get a CTD after just a few seconds. I've added nothing to it except to change that unmentionable file.

Anyone had similar problems? I'm on XP still.

fanx, Clive

Clive

E-mail on the way with Tom's install guide. Is RS installed at default location and named the default name? If not you will need to edit the 7 uisel batch file selectors in appl/data folder and the start-up RS theater selector batch file in main RS directory.

Bob.

Clive, 32-bit or 64-bit?

Here we go.

1. No matter which it is, the the fully-updated vanilla CFS3 install, or a copy of it, simply MUST be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games.

2. Run the CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Rev-Beta-1.0-Installer_part-1.exe, aimed at the above location. Be aware that it is a two-stage installer. First stage creates the new main game folder and copies the vanilla files and folders into that folder. The second stage places the files anf folders of the Part 1 PTO RS install into that folder.

3. If you want the CFS3 PTO Rising Sun main game folder in another location, simply cut and paste the folder to the desired location. Also, at this time, if you had placed a copy of CFS3 to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games just in order to install PTO RS, you can dispose of that now.

4. After the PTO RS main game folder has been placed where you want it, simply install PTO RS Parts 2 through 7 aimed at the new location. After Part 7 has run, you will be asked if you want to run the BDP Zapper, ZX Zapper, and Multicfs3.exe. Say yes to all three, and clear the window of Multicfs3.exe and type in CFS3 PRO Rising Sun.

At this time, run the cfs3config.exe from inside the main game folder only. When you have done that, run cfs3.exe also from INSIDE the PTO RS main game folder ONLY. Fly it once in Quick Combat and shut it down. DO NOT RUN ANY DESKTOP ICONS UNTIL INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE!

NOTE: I cannot stress enough that you follow the PTO RS Installation Instructions EXACTLY.

5. Now comes the tricky part, Part 8, the uisel installer. If you know for sure where your Combat Flight Simulator 3.0 Application Data resides, you are in good shape.

I don't know how your machine is set up, but I would assume that it is located in C:\Documents and Settings\User Name (Your Name)\Application Data\Microsoft.

Aim the Part 8 uisel installer at this location, or to where your Combat Flight Simulator 3.0 Application Data folder lies. It should be in the same directory folder alongside it.

6. After the CFS3_PTO_Rising_Sun_Uisel-Installer_part-8.exe has been run, go into the PTO RS main game folder and look for the Rising_Sun_Theater_Selector.bat file.

Right-click on it and choose Edit.

Look for these seven (7) lines:

:SINO
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:pEARL
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:WAKE
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:MIDWAY
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:pNG
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:AVG
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

:pHILIPPINES
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

If your Application Data folder lies in a location other than where this line indicates, the location in the lines above must be changed to the correct Application Data (AppData) location.

EXAMPLE:

:pHILIPPINES
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

would then become

:pHILIPPINES
CD "C:\Documents and Settings\User Name (Your Name)Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun______"

It MUST be changed in all 7 lines.

Also, if your main game folder lies anywhere other than C:\Progrqam Files\Microsoft Games, you need to go into the CS3 PTO Rising Sun________ Application Data (AppData) folder and make some changes there as well. Each of the 2*_uisel.bat that are there need to be edited.

Example:

If you installed PTO RS to D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun,

then the line in each of the 7 2*_uisel.bat files would have to be changed from:

CD "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun"

to:

CD "D:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun"

Once you have successfully done all of this, you should be good to go.

Thanks Kasey and Bob :) the folders and paths all looked ok but I re-ran the multicfs3 and uisel and it's working now.

XP is ok but I never liked all this administrator and users business, an unnecessary complication.

Cheers!

Sympathies Clive; in spite of all the kind help from Grizz, I'm still having a hard time with RS for an unknown reason on 7/x64.
However we will get there!

Have been trying a separate drive, but think will try default location now just to see what happens; then reinstall later. Might be some weird stuff in my registry, etc, at fault.

Ian, if you're installing to another drive, you have to add an extra line to the seven uisel batch files in the appdata folder: 2avg_uisel.bat to 2wake_uisel.bat inclusive. Scroll to the end of each file and find the line :SUCCESS.

If installing to drive E, folder E:\Program Files\Rising Sun, in each of these files you will need:-
Code:
:SUCCESS
E:
CD E:\Program Files\Rising Sun

There's no registry hacks involved. I've been working on an installation guide for RS which will be included in the next release, but in the meantime the draft is attached to this post. Hope this helps!
