Qualifying at plate tracks and "conventional wisdon"

As long as I've been watching NASCAR, the technique for qualifying at the plate tracks has always been the same: Run lap 1 high, and lap 2 low. The explanation has always been that lap 1 is used to build up speed, so you take “the long way” around to have maximum time to gain speed to prepare for lap 2. I've always wondered about this, and if there was any data to support this technique. Well, Jeff Gordon answered that question on Saturday. He ran both laps on the bottom, and won the pole. Imagine that. Will everyone else do it that way from now on?
