Question about add on scenery file

Does the size of the file affect frame rate?

I noticed the more add on scenery i add slows down the load time into free flight, but does the amount of files also affect frame rate? I know it affects it at the airport, but does say objects 1,000s of miles away affect frame rate all over the globe?

I.e. I figured the objects and textures only load/render when you get close to the location, or am i wrong and files in California affect the frame rate when i fly in Texas etc?

Objects and textures only load and render when you close to there location. Many models use level of detail that live swap out high detail models for lower detail models when you are away from the object to keep FPS up.

Objects 1,000s of miles away should have no effect on FPS. I don't think it would be possible to have Objects 1,000s of miles have any effect of FPS as culling should deal with them if someone used some black magic LOD tricks to try and keep the object render when it shouldn't be.

Since you asking are you having a problem with some scenery?

Hi no issues, i just caught the add on scenery bug for military air bases and went wild. Started noticing the load times started chugging along, and get -20-40 fps to begin with. Was worried it was going to affect frame rate in game. My add on scenery file is 3.66 gb with 9,177 files!

I usually remove scenery i dont think makes or breaks the airport, silly objects like cargo, etc. i did notice FS9 airports really slowed down load times.

My FSX addon scenery folders are huge, 305 GB for 210,216 files: a bit of ORBX, but mostly a lot of photoreal like NL2000, BlueSkyScenery, Hawaii, Polynesia, FranceVFR, etc...

Yes FSX loading time at startup is on the slow side, in the 2 to 5 min range... That's very slow! But it has no effect on FPS.

What kills FPS is approaching a busy airport in a CaptainSim or PMDG aircraft, with lots of AI movements around you.

Also Autogen with settings maxed out is bad on FPS...

I'm always wondering if things are better with 64-bit software like P3D and MSFS... I'm sure it's much better... I'm stuck with FSX on a 10yo laptop, can't afford much else...

I'm happy flying with exotic aircrafts over photoreal scenery, almost no autogen... I avoid major airports, try to fly 250 mph max, or way less, etc...

okay good to hear, i forgot i dod have about 19 gigs of aerosoft and orbx, but no where near the size of your file!

I try to orchestrate my ai planes so they are almost never at the airport at the same time, seems, that seemed to help.
