Question for the devs

Hi,

Just a quick(ish) question about the processes running in the background when BHAH is running, how many do you have running and which ones are they?

I am asking this because I think it will help people with older machines run BHAH, and also because at the moment I have 44 running processes and cannot work out which MS ones can be safely stopped without crippling my machine.

Incidentally I am running the following and getting as few as 11fps over german airfields in a furball and as low as 20+ in bad weather, the max FPS I get is 58.

AMD2 6000+
8600GT 1GB ram
2GB Ram
XP SP2
500GB SATA hard drive
600W PSU
2 x DVD R/W

Thanks

In that case you will need to d/l FSAutostart, its free and it will turn off any and all background processes that are still running. It lets you choose which ones to turn off,it tells you if you should or should NOT turn yhem off,and when you restart the 'puter they all start up as well........i gain around 150-250 RAM when used!!

That coupled with FreeRamXP (another free utility) i gain in total around 300-350 RAM which you gotta admit,is a LOT!!

Sorry,im not a Dev but there you are.

Regardless of PC power, the less you have running in the background the better it is. On my WIN XP PC, I have many applications running, including Norton AV and without stopping them when running OFF, I can see a FPS drop and the GPU working alot harder.

Whichever way you stop these TSR's from running, be careful, in case you stop a critical system process. Most utilities, like EndItAll etc, will not allow stopping of critical applications.

Interesting; thanks for the info!

FS Autostart is excellent if you need to shut as many things down as possible. With my new computer, I haven't needed it anymore.

I do use another utility, "TUT-The Ultimate Troubleshooter" from Answers That Work, which is excellent at telling you what background tasks are necessary, and suggesting ones that can be safely, permanently stopped and it has the control to do it for you, or when it can't it gives clear instructions on how to do it. It has really improved my system. As an example, I have a WinTV card and I like to watch the few free Qam HD channels that are on my cable TV (I don't have a HD converter box).
Before using TUT I could only tune in the lower res HD channels, the high res ones would stutter or freeze. After using TUT to disable and shut down a lot of BG processes that are not needed and I don't use, the channels all come in smooth now.

Here's my system for comparison:
Gigabyte GBT GA-EP45-DS3 LGA 775 Intel P45 ATX Intel MOB
Intel core 2 duo E6600 2.4ghz (not over clocked)
Patriot Extreme 2gb DDR2 SDRAM
Antec Trio TP3-650w ATX12v
EVGA PCIEx GeForce 8800gts 320mb
SB Audigy 2ZS
Windows XP Pro SP3
2x WD Sata HD 3gb 16mb cache
DVD/CD R/RW

Winder,

Sorry I should have put that in I was running with all settings at 2 apart from clouds which is set at 1, I am also running at 1042x768 using 16 bit.

Also I would like to compliment the team on an excellent game, well worth the wait, if only other games were as polished as this when they first come out.

Thanks
