Question from Essex103...

Hey guys,

Essex103 sent me a PM with this question, and requested a thread be opened. (Essex103, you can do this yourself by hitting the "Post New Thread" button and doing exactly what I just did)

While I am new to SOH, I have run CFS2 for many years and with many add-ons on a Vista PC which, unfortunately, recently died.

I have done a fresh install of CFS2 onto a Win 7 and can play the basic game with some add-ons. (87 Days, F4F at Guadalcanal etc) I have also been able to download certain aircraft from SOH but repeated attempts to either use aircraft from my Vista backup library or fresh downloads result in a screen with a gun sight only and no joy (though full pix shows in the choose aircraft screen). The "installer" which appears in the aircraft folder gets an error message when tried though I have downloaded the Adobe AIR app.

I wanted to pose this problem to the community but cannot see where or how to do so. Any help would be appreciated and it is great to see how rich the CFS2 world remains after all these many years.

Thanks, Essex103

Could be a Gauge compatibility issue with W7... did you Install CFS2 outside of the Default Program Files location, or choose the 'Run as Administrator' option?

my guess is it's a WIN 7 thing with 2D panels

Essex103,

Welcome, you'll find we're a friendly, helpful bunch. Please don't be afraid of asking questions.

Your original post mentions the Adobe AIR app. Ignore this. Adobe "acquired the .air file extension way after CFS2 had passed into PC memory, what you see on your PC is a new operating system trying to identify the sim's .air files (one in every aircraft folder) as something that software can use.

You also mention you get a gun sight only. One of the quirks of Windows 7 (& later Operating Systems ?) is they don't like 2D panels with the dimensions 1024 x 768 bitmaps. The kicker is that an awful lot of older aircraft (I'm presuming most of you Vista add-on aircraft fit the bill here) have these 2D panels.

Now if you fly VC view, or use the HUD display, this is no problem, but if you like to fly 2D panel view, this is a real killer.

Some of the newer add-ons here will work under WIN 7 (most notably Allen's aircraft, which are always configured to have WIN 7 friendly panels :encouragement:. Some of mine do, but I'm no panel expert:dizzy:.

All I can suggest is search here for some newer panels for the aircraft you like, swap them & see if it works.

If there are particular aircraft you are looking for, post & let's see what the good people here in the Basement can rustle up for you.
