I saw a photo on FB other day(can not locate it) of an F4U1A in darker gray on white paint scheme, with the "star and bar" mid to late 43 marking, but with the red outline. I have seen this paint scheme a few times over years, one in a road champs F4U1A diecast I still have from my childhood(along with many others). Wondering which units/theaters etc ever used this scheme? Anyone know? Always wondered because 99% of photos, videos, preserved planes have seen are in the dark glossy blue or the light blue/gray on white.

I would have to say that It was June 1943. Saddly it might have been a goof or fictional.

The only Corsair I know of that was painted gray over white was the AU-1 Corsair. It was the last version purchased by the Navy and first flew in 1952. The Marines used it in ground attack missions in Korea. It had a slightly lower power engine than the F4U-5, increased armor and 10 rocket pylons under the wings which caused a lower top speed. Since it was a dedicated ground attack version that was of little concern. It also had the four 20mm F4U-4 wing cannon armament configuration.
