Questions for 2024 current status

Hi all,

I pre-ordered 2024 and installed on release (well, not quite, I had the saga most did), but ended up getting a refund a few weeks later as I couldn't get it to work. I've got a few questions I'm hoping the collective here can help with to determine if I re-purchase, I hope this is a useful thread for others in a similar situation too. I mainly fly VFR in light aircraft and WWII military to put a context on it. Also, I don't get opportunities for hours on it, perhaps half hour here, an hour there, so the thought of spending days getting my head around how to pop off for a local flight somewhere has put me off going back again. My PC specs are 14900k, 4070ti card, 1Tb SSD dedicated for 2024, 64Gb DDR5 ram and 500gb internet for relevance, so my questions are:

1. How does the scenery (detail, colours, sharpness, ambience etc) look compared to 2020 now? When I read reviews from a while back, they were very mixed.
2. How easy is it to just jump in an aircraft and fly somewhere of your choice compared to 2020?
3. Is the option for having some of the scenery / aircraft data on your HD now working? I heard they were giving options, but not sure if it's now activated
4. Can I quickly assign an FS 2020 control set up for a given aircraft or do I have to go through hoops to build a profile for each one? Last time I tried it, it kept forgetting what I'd set up so I got completely confused as to what the hell I was doing!
5. I use FSLTL in 2020, does anyone use it in 2024? If so, how well does it work?
6. Can I still use Addon Linker to manage downloaded free scenery with ease?
7. how stable is it given that I will mainly be just doing free flights?

Many thanks,
Neil

Here are my two cents/pennies:

1. AWESOME!
2. The same.
3. Not yet.
4. Depends on your controller/peripherals setup - my advice: stick with the absolute basics for now (I have 1 monitor, keyboard, mouse, plug & play yoke/quadrant/pedals).
5. Yes, no landings and some takeoffs, but not all. They're working on it.
6. Yes.
7. THIS is the big one - my advice: TRUST the sim to install itself in it's default location with it's default settings for your system (it's a 'smart' installer and the sim will run perfectly well), and slowly tweak from there.

Thanks for your replies. I guess the default location will be C drive? I have a separate drive reserved for it so I'd need to install there.

Yes, by default the sim will install on the same drive as Windows because it's a Windows App, not a stand-alone program. It should work on a separate drive of course, and I have 3 SSD's, but I've played it safe and I'm glad I did.
If you really must have it on a separate drive, the safest way is to install it to the default location first, run it once or twice and then move it using the Xbox App:

Click on the MSFS2024 icon in the left menu, then click on the three dots in the grey box:

In the next pop-up window, select the Files tab and click on the CHANGE DRIVE button:

If you don’t mind spending a few $ on top I highly recommend looking into external software for the controller assignments.
The built in assignments are not really logical at times and if you have multiple controllers it will drive you mad.
FSUIPC and SPAD are both better than the built in version and give you the benefit of being able to customize for each aircraft you typically fly.
At the same time I have a basic setup for piston single and piston twin that I apply to any new aircraft to start with. Often that is all I need.
