Questions from a returning user

Good evening all,

Years ago, I was an avid CFS3 player, but wasn't on SOH yet. I've just now installed the game again, and of course I'm looking for help now. I hope you people can help me.

  • I've just done a clean install of CFS3, to install the ETO expansion pack and updates you need a vanilla install, is that right?
  • Can the default skins of the vanilla install be replaced without those horrible wingtips and stripes on the planes?
  • About the Ankor shaders, can those be installed on the vanilla install before installing ETO, or should I wait?
  • Are there texture improvements (ground) available for the base game and if so where can I get them?
  • is there a way to get a view of the enemy you're fighting as in the IL-2 series?

I realize these are a lot of questions, sorry about that. I'm no longer the young lad I was when I was playing the game before.

Thanks a million in advance for your help!

Hi Hunter,

Thanks for the reply.

I know there are a lot of skins here, but do they take away the horrible things that the default skins have without adding new aircraft entries to the game?

Do you have a download link for the new beautiful ground you're referring to?

I'm actually looking for every texture improvement to the default game that is available. preferably with links to the download. I have a busy job, a kid and a girlfriend and so not too much time to look around for hours and hours.

But thanks again for your answers!

Hi Priller and Hunter,

About the default skins and texture improvments, installing ETO to version 1.5 will do that,
actually by replacing those stock skins and redoing sceneries and airports and more.
Then you may want to take it farther as a few here certainly have. I would start with the vanilla
CFS3 version 3.1 (2 updates) and create ETO with the 5 updates:
ETO Expansion 1.0, 1.20, 1.40, 1.40_Hotfix, and 1.50.

The fifth one contains an older Ankor Shaders, but there are newer versions to use.

Like Priller, I'm a returner, and so far I have a basic CFS3 running nicely. I've downloaded the ETO zips ready to go, but the instructions, especially the bits about batch files, make my brain go a bit fuzzy. How easy is it, really? How about WotR? How does that compare?

Going back to Priller's post, is there a way to get an external view of other aircraft?

Hi Priller/dhasdell,

using the target select function and then cycling views will enable you to view selected enemy formations, whether ground, ships, or aircraft. F4 cycles views, but one of the views has two toggle options - the Player/Target view. So if you cycle through F4 views and don't see a view of your selected enemy target, it means you have to toggle the Player Target view. IIRC that is Ctrl+shift+F4 when you are in the player target view and you are lloking from the player to the target.

There is a related useful document up with the SDKs in the stickies in this forum. It tells you about the various views in the viewUI.xml. Player/Target is one of the views.

Thank you Hunter and Daiwilletti. I'll try those. I was puzzled that Tab seemed to have two different functions.
