quick tip needed for carrier landings

After several months I've gone from quick combat to the campaigns and as simple as it might seem I've forgotten the command to lower the tailhook so I can land on the carrier. Can't find the manual either....lil' help? Thanks in advance.

G2B is...

...correct, unless you are using the original FS/CFS keyboard layout. If you are an old head using the original, the command is SHIFT+G. :wavey:

I have found that the tail hook is not needed for the kind of carrier landings I usually do....which end up with my plane either sticking out the tail end of the ship or in a crumpled pile in the middle of the deck.

Obio just remember if the ship don't sink its a good landing, and quit paying attention to that LSO............I think he would prefer you to do a fly over and try to parachute onto the deck :costumes:

Thanks for the help guys, ready to try again tonight

My son is 6 and has impressive skills on the game already. My only problem now is fighting him over the joystick, I can hardly get any playing time. :kilroy:

Remember, you can set the tailhook to whatever you want in Settings/Controller Assignments and scrolling down to the tailhook settings line. Before you know it, that 6-year old will be doing night ops and putting the big birds on deck!

If you fly the old Stringbag you don't need a tailhook. In a decent wind you can just about hover over the deck. :)

Want some real fun though try putting down a Barracuda from the cockpit:isadizzy:.

Or wait until you get some of the CFS2 jets installed and try to do a trap with one of those fast fliers. I have tried to jet trap a few hundred times....and have not had a successful trap yet....No, wait...I did one or 2 with the T-2 Buckeye I converted to CFS2..but that is it.

OBIO

I find that going by the aircraft's ORIGINAL manual is pretty good... 120 kts by CFS-2s standard... it's way too hot... bring her in at about 90 kts... this works for generally any Navy stock bird in the game.

Carrier...

...landings are much less difficult than most people believe, if you keep one thing in mind: TTFA (Trim the F***ing Aircraft)! :173go1:

Once you get this down, you will find that landing on even the smallest escort carrier is a cinch. Most crashes on landing and waveoffs happen because the 'pilot' is fighting the controls. With the aircraft trimmed properly, the controls require only a feather-light touch and respond instantly. You have to 'dirty-up'(canopy open, gear, hook and flaps down) the aircraft in the pattern and trim her in that configuration BEFORE you turn final. :ernae:

Taking carrier landing lessons from OBIO is like taking driving lessons from my wife. OBIO only recently learned that there is such a thing as trim control on airplanes, and he still refuses to use them. Did I say he is stubborn? How stubborn is he? His idea of trim control is rewritiing the AIR file. His favorite saying is: This is not Burger King! I fly my way or no way at all! :costumes::costumes::costumes: OMG! He sounds like.....ME! :redf:

Don't worry!

Not being able to land on a carrier should not be a big concern.

Many CFS2 pilots have extremely short attention spans, and haven't got the patience to land a plane on an airfield much less a carrier. They just hit X to End Mission, so they can get on to the next one. They would also prefer that the missions start in flight at the site of the first combat, so they don't have to fly to that point or bother warping.

This could lead to a major increase in framerates, since bases could be eliminated altogether and we could also eliminate animated landing gear and flaps to simplify things further. Think of the savings in disk space! We could call this new breakthrough something snappy like.......QUICK COMBAT.

OR we could issue Ridlin tablets with the CFS2 CDs. :friday:

Now how do I go about removing my tongue from my cheek? :wavey:

I always land on the carrier at end of mission but rarely land on airstrips. Why? In the campaigns, I have lost too many decent wingmen because the blind fools crash for no reason. F6F, the other manager of the site at http://groups.msn.com/WW2CombatFlightSimulatorSite has a whole series of modified US stock campaigns... some with P-38s, Corsairs or Hellcats only; some for the same planes but with all missions at night; and others with in-the-air starts and endings for the carrier/runway timid.

The nighttime with Hellcat are my favorite :applause:

When wingmen crash on landing, it's for very real reasons. Usually it's because they stallout. They cannot fly as slow as the player because they have no flaps.

You can avoid losing wingmen in three ways:

- As soon as you get on final approach give the SPLIT command and instead of landing fly directly over the strip and do a circuit before landing. Your wingmen will land normally.

- Do not give the SPLIT command on final, but go in 'hot' about 20-30kts above normal stall speed without flaps. Your wingmen will land normally.

- Give the SPLIT command as soon as you are on final. Then accelerate away from your flight and land normally before they can catchup. Your wingmen will land normally.

I resemble those remarks! Actually, I have been doing better with trimming...I trimmed the Thanksgiving turkey, I trimmed the Christmas tree, and I trimmed my nose hair and toe nails. And I have been practicing trimming out a plane....just having problems figuring out where to hang the ornaments LOL.

AI do use flaps.
It depends on the Var. that is used in the Model to activate the flap animation. The Stock B24 and I think the Hellcat flaps will deploy when under AI control.
