Scenery for RAF Gan, Maldives islands, Indian ocean. by Ian Elliot 28/3/13

I use the Calclassic retro ai aircraft and scenery in my FS9 install, and there's an RAF Transport command Comet 4 that flys and performs TNG's from this scenery, you dont need this
add-on but i'd seriously recomend it,not just for this scenery but the whole world.

You will need these objects-----

"classic_libraries_v2.zip" by Wolfgang Gersch, sorry about the large download size
for these but there's a lot of really good objects i like using.

"type81_tribal_class_frigates_fs9.zip" by Mike Hudson, available from Flightsim

Optional-----

You will need these ai aircraft
"jy_canberras_ai_fs9_1.zip" by John Young, available from Flightsim

"raf13sqpr9.zip" repaint for above Canberra, by Dale Ashcroft, available from Flightsim

"jy_ai_buccaneers_fs9_1.zip" by John Young, available from Flightsim

I also use a Vulcan from John Youngs retro Waddington and Vulcan ai scenery package, found
at Flightsim

Hi Ian,

Once again a very nice scenery - thanks for your efforts!

BTW, what was the classic route from UK to Far East used early Sixties by Transport Command? Up to now I couldn't find any clear Information about this subject.

Cheers,
Bernard

The route was Brize Norton - Akrotiri (Cyprus) - Gan (Maldives) - Tengah (Singapore) - Kai Tak (Hong Kong), and return. Masirah or Aden might have been on the route.
The route I've given was certainly in use in the early 1970s. I've flown it myself.

Dave

Thanks Dave for your first-hand information. Now I will be able to create a correct AI traffic to Far East.

Cheers,
Bernard

Pretty much as Dave states, although there were a few alternative's, Lyneham was probably more busy in the 60's than Brize, another stop over would be El Adem in Libya, although this could be tricky as it was very close to the Egyptian border, President Nasser was'nt happy about border incursions, some clever navigation was required by transport pilots hugging the border south then west, but through the 60's, more operations were moved to Akrotiri, Muharraq,Bahrein was also a stop over.
cheers ian

And, courtesy of your good self, we are now able to fly from most of those destinations. Thanks Ian. :icon29:

Thanks Ian. That's what meanwhile I could find out. Early Sixties Brize Norton was under control of the U.S. Air Force. Interesting your remark about El Adem near Tobrouk: A while ago I did a very basic Afcad for this airfield, but up to now I had no idea how to use it ...

Cheers,
Bernard
