RCAF H-19 (S-55) coming up...

Dear folks,

as announced in the current Yellowknife thread, this one will be next:

"The Sikorsky H-19 was acquired by the RCAF in 1954. The major share of a helicopter airlift which played a vital role in the construction phase and maintenance of the Mid-Canada line was carried out by a comparatively new Air Transport Command unit, No. 108 Communication Flight. Six H-34, six H-21 and up to ten H-19 helicopters were employed to airlift, from marshalling points, materials required to build and furnish the line installations. The unit, flying approximately 9,000 hours during 1956, air lifted more than 10,000 tons of construction and electronic equipment and 14,000 personnel, without the loss of life. These operations, unprecedented in Canadian helicopter history, were often flown over rugged terrain and under hazardous conditions. No. 108 Com. Flight contributed materially to the air defence of Canada and the North American continent." (rcaf.com)

Should be ready within the following days...

Cheers,

Thanks, Randy!

The textures were almost ready for upload, but my internal board of acceptance refused to give it a go: :173go1:
I think the upper cheatline is way too wide.
A template Sir Rob Galahad kindly provided to me tells that this cheatline should have a width of 2 inches. But what's 2 inches in pixels? Anyway, it's less than the current line's width.
Back to the paint shack again... :running:

Cheers,
Markus.

I think that's better now:

But here's a question for the RCAF experts:
The "Canadian Aircraft Markings 101" on canmilair.com won't give the answer on how the H-19's lettering of this 1958-1965 "RCAF+3" era was set concerning the bottom side, and I coudn't grab a pic from this perspective.

So this is guesswork:

Does anyone know if this is correct?
I believe that if the serial was repeated on the belly, it should have been outlined, due to better visibility on the blue surface.

What do you think?

Cheers,
Markus.

Markus,
On a quick search of my usual sources I find inconsistent images of the roundel being displayed on the underside but none have visible serials. It may just be there's no highlight, but from the images of more recent birds, it's roundel/no serial. In fact, because the "Belcher" decal sets only have 3 roundels it may be that the belly one was a 'variant' that drifted in/out.

Looking good sir!

Rob

I'm guessing here, but isn't it a more common presentation for the belly insignia to have the bottom towards the rear, rather than towards the front?

That sure is a pretty livery!

And an excellent paint job to present it! Great work!

Thank you, guys!

So I'd better omit any belly markings. This whirlybird is intended to be flown anyhow - and not to be observed from what we call in german the "frog's perspective"... :icon_lol:

So this is the (almost) final status:

The port side placement of the serial will be corrected before uploading: Of course it has to be right (aft) of the roundel!

If anyone should ask:
These evaluation hops took place at Misty Fjord's CZST Stewart. No Mid-Canada-Line facilities to support there, but sure a nice place to whirl around in...

Cheers,
Markus.

Looks great. Nice smooth work on the cheat line on the nose.
Certainly colorful in the snow country.
:ernae:

Thanks, fellas!
Glad you like it.

And a big 'thank you!' has to go to Frank:
Your texture templates made this one easy! Especially the fact that fuselage, nose, sliding door and air intake frames do have the same scale. So it just was a matter of 'cut & paste'.
But one (very!) small glitch remains:
I think the sliding door is a little offset at the foreward side. The cheatline matches perfectly at the aft edge, but nosewards, it seems to be one pixel too high. You might blame this kind of 'worn' appearance on the harsh conditions this chopper works in... :icon_lol:

Cheers,
Markus.
