Eugene Ely takes his Curtiss pusher airplane off from the deck of USS Birmingham on 14 November 1910.

It was the First airplane takeoff from a warship. He flew for two miles before landing on a Willoughby Spit beach.

It was a big success and so they decided to continue experiment. But this time, a plane had to land on a ship.

It happens on 18 January 1911, Eugene Ely lands with the same plane on USS Pennsylvania, making this first landing on a warship in history and a historical event.

Notice his "life vest" (a bicycle tube!)

Notice the obvious slant in the deck to get a running start! LOL! Man how things have changed!

Congrats to all the participants.

Thanks for the find and the share Brad! :salute:

In the last pic, lots of small craft standing by in case he went in the water. Good idea, considering the inner tube Mae West he's wearing.

thats not a Mae West...It's a Callista Flockhart!!:icon_lol:
