Realism I can do without

I acknowledge everyone has a different taste in the realism they want in a game. Most of us here want more than what a console game can offer. That said here are a few things I can do without in a flight sim game.

1. Engine sound so load I can't hear anything else
2. Views so limited by the wings and stuff that I can't see what I am doing
(I like a see thru cockpit now and then)

3. Engine and surface management so high that I really should go to flight school first (I'm thinking Targetware).

4. No radar help at all (I don't have as much fun if I can't find the enemy at all).

I know some of you have more fun with all these things and I don't protest. I just hope I have options to select my preferences.

And no, I won't be putting my computer in a meat locker, running an industrial size fan in my face and have caster oil sprayed in my face now and then. And no electric shock when I get hit by bullets either.

Well you have the right sim in OFF then :) as you can turn on/off up/down all of those.

1) Sorry about the noise, aircraft engines have that nasty habit, and you Are sitting in and open cockpit, less than 4 feet distant from the source of noise. If it anoys you greatly, you could Lower Your Speakers, or use earplugs

2) Buy a Trackir, and hope for a high wing monoplane, or Both

3) I thought that Workshop was most explicit in that respect. Try Looking

4) Wrong War old bean, it's 1917. Radar wasn't invented till 1943. Should you bother to read the STICKY OFF Tips & Cheats, you'll discover that you aren't the first to recognize the problem

PS . . Hay Guys, I'm on my best behaviour, besides an excess of 30 posts is No Newbie

EDIT (F3) will give you the see through cockpit

Uriah,

After reading your list, if we did that, we would have made an Arcade shooter. Thankfully as Pol stated, it's all workable within the control panel of the game. :)

Uriah,

You'll have to excuse some of the reality fanatics at this site who tend to be pretty blunt. Many here would probably prefer your meat locker technique. hehe.

But there are plenty of us here who, like you, prefer a balance so that flying a mission doesn't take four hours and actual flight school isn't necessary and some action can be quickly found, etc. The OFF guys have taken care of ALL of us and created the ability to tweak to our hearts' content. It's going to be fun! (No matter what your needs/wants in a WWI flight sim may be.) :jump:

Uriah, for you is WINGS OF WAR ( http://www.gamespot.com/pc/sim/wingsofwar/index.html and http://pc.gamezone.com/gamesell/p24470.htm ), not OFF (deo gratias or strictly speaking gratias Polovski and co. for this sim!:trophy:)

Although I'm flying a combat sim, I hate war in reality. I much prefer to settle things with common sense. So, Uriah, I'll just assume, you're under 20, and help a little.

1. Engine sound:can be adjusted in "Workshop"

2. Views: press "escape" and check the options in the menue at the right (controls - everything can be chosen and keyboard shortcuts can be made for views, and all the other actions and orders)

3. Engine and surface management: see "Workshop" again

4. Radar: press Shift + T to get a "radar-like" screen. With Strg+Shift+T, you can change radar range from 1 to 2 to 4 to 8 miles. Pressing only "T", you can switch through the targets assigned (aircraft, vehicles, buildings etc.).

With P2, you will find to have a very good WW1 sim; and if you want, and won't be too lazy, it can be exciting. Give it a try.
(Or be lazy, and choose "Wings of War", as Schwarzer Baron says - it's your choice, what will make you happy).

Cheers; Olham

As a follow-up, where can one learn engine management? There are so many games which are immensely realistic and I constantly feel like I am merely 'making do' and not making the most of the sim because I have no idea how to work the damned engine!

Rupert, in manual... In CFS3 is basic strategy guide bundle:gossip: All wishing directly combat flights, but cannot control the plane... Learn it.. Will like it...

Hmm, that will mean locating the manual, could be tricky ;)

I'll see what I can do.

Rupert,

If you are interested, I can send you a guide I have on engine management for IL-2. I know its a different sim but the majority will still apply and you can get an idea of how it works. Mind you, I don't think any WWI planes had variable pitch props (I could be wrong), so you could just skip that part in OFF. Just PM me if you are interested or anyone who is interested for that matter. I may post it on rapidshare or something like that if there is enough interest.

Cheers,

John

The Basics of Engine ( Mixture ) control, are universal, there are NO variable pitch propellors, but the WWI Aircaft has such High Drag, many run wide open all the time. Some cruise around 85% throttle, but not much lower or they lose altitude quick. :kilroy:

I'm interested. baron@creolejazz.com

Thanks! :jump:

As far as mixture control, it's rather simple actually. Above roughly 5000 feet, the air becomes thin, so the fuel supply must be leaned out, or it runs poorly. If you don't lean-out your fuel supply repeatedly as you climb, you'll stall due to an overly rich mixture.

In real life a lean running engine, runs extremely hot, however we don't have that problem in a sim. But if you lean out your fuel supply excessively, you'll stall. In any case, there's NO way to restart once you stall . . Just something else to be concerned about.

That's why I select AUTO MIXTURE in Workshop, they do Such a Good JOB :redfire:

I have to admit I fly with automixture on too - well its a small concession I think.

I'm trying to fly full realism in all the sims I fly now just for that added little immersion factor. It hasn't been going too great so far as I always forget what to do when (OFF is easy enough because you only really have to worry about mixture). When you factor in prop pitch and lets not forget superchargers (I know; not this sim) it really can become a handful. But, if I really want to take the extra step to feel as the actual pilots felt, even though a slap upside the head from the wife is the most danger I face, I personally think its worth at least a try.

Just my .02

John

That's it! If Winder flies with auto mixture on that's good enough for me too.

Thank the Lord, OFF doesn't need to fret about water injection (War Power ). The mechanics must've really loved that. :kilroy:
