Receiving CFS3 has stopped running message

After having run CFS3, ETO, PTO, MAW, Korea, etc. without a hitch for a long time, the sim has now (periodically) started to shut down. After starting the game and getting to the opening screen with the pilot on the crates, within seconds, I received the standard CFS3 needs to close error message.

I've done nothing to alter any of the CFS3 sims. The only thing "different" is that I turned off the computer for several days. (I usually leave it running). When I restarted, the issue began. It affects all CFS3 sims - ETO, PTO, etc. No other application is affected. This has occurred twice now.

If I shut down the computer and restart, the problem seems - thus far - to have abated. However, can anyone explain why this is happening and how to avoid it?

Thanks.

There is a file - I can't remember which one - that periodically gets out of date. Simply restarting the game solves that problem and you'll be OK for some months. Could this be it?
