Remembering Capt. (R) John Peterson, USN

Navy Chief

Senior Member
I don't know why his name came into my mind this morning, but I was remembering a CO I worked for, while assigned to VFA-106 at NAS Cecil Field (1984-87); Capt. John "Swede" Peterson.

Sadly, I found out he passed away last year, on April 9th. This man was the finest CO I ever had the honor of working for. He was always friendly, and a consummate naval officer and leader. His career was most distinguished.

Following his time with VFA-106, one of his tours was as the XO of the USS Saratoga (CV-62). Here is his obit:

He was a pilot with VA-46 earlier in his career. I wish I knew how to modify repaints, because I would truly like to put his name on the cockpit.

It was an honor knowing you, Capt. Rest easy, sir.

AMEC(AW) Peter C. Ward, USN, (Ret.)

First off, sorry to hear about the loss of your CO. Throughout my short career I have served under many it seems. I have only run into 2 though in my time that truly understand their people. One of them was actually an undesignated deck seaman when he came in (I met him as a Captain at my current command). I am sure Capt. Peterson got a proper send off.

Secondly if it is any consolation I know how to modify repaints. If all you wanted done is to add his name to nose I think I can manage that. It is believe it or not harder to repaint aircraft in the sim than it is in real life. I can tape off letters/numbers and spray the poly like it's going out of style. I would just need whichever texture you needed modified (I do not own the plane) and add it in the blue box with white lettering as pictured?

I see a VA-106 paint was not included in the original package. I am not artistic enough to do tail art, but can change the sqaudron number, and BuNo/Modex of the aircraft if you remember what his were.

Thanks for your offer, Steve. I was contacted by another SOH member, who may be doing the repaint. There have been two VA-46 repaints done for the RAZBAM A-7E, but both have been the Tactical Gray paint scheme. To my knowledge, a Hi-Viz VA-46 Clansmen paint scheme has not been done yet. Actually, I am in the process of tracking down some real-life pictures of a VA-46 aircraft from the 1982 time period. I know I have one; just have to find it.

There was a VA-106, but they didn't fly Corsair IIs. They flew Skyhawks. Then the squadron was decommissioned, and when it was recommissioned, it became VFA-106 (when I was with them), and that is when I knew Capt. Peterson. When he was the CO of VA-46, I was a AME2 with VA-15.

Thanks again, shipmate. NC

Is no problem. If you ever need lettering and things of that nature, I can do that if you ever need help. Best to leave the whole bird to the pro's. I am not artistically inclined if you will enough with photoshop to do fancy graphics and things like that.

Well, if the RAZBAM A-7 is ever repainted in the colors of NATC Patuxent River, I will contact you! I would like to get my name (and one other shipmate's also) and rank put on the nose landing gear door.

My first six months in the USN was spent as a Plane Captain there...

Thanks! NC

Update: I just did a search for the BUNO of the aircraft in this picture. According to what I read, this aircraft is now on display outside a school in Florida. Anyone live near the High Springs Community School, High Springs (FL)?
