Renaming Aircraft.

Is there any safe, simple way to edit aircraft so they will appear with a different name in the game? Often addon aircraft have long over complex names which are hard to distinguish in combat. I fear if I go around and fiddle with the properties of the aircraft I'll stuff up something, so any professional help would be great. Thanks.

Open the XDP file with notepad and rename as you like
keep a copy of the XDP outside the game just incase :pop4:

But don't rename the ******.m3d or you will have to rename the m3d file and alot more!! I am not actually sure what you really want as really all you need to know is if it is an enemy or not. perhaps you can explain better what you mean by a complicated name.

Perhaps what you mean is in the Aircraft list in the game - and someone has a name for their model like "Messerschmitt Bf109G-3-422/H JG301 August 1943 Northern France"
The problem is that

  • You only see that name when you hold the mouse pointer over it, otherwise the list only shows "Messerschmitt Bf1.." which could be any one of a number of possibilities
  • If you have labels turned on in-game and there are six of these as AI, half the sky is filled with flying labels
Find the .XDP file in the aircraft's folder and save a copy somewhere safe. Open the original .XDP file with Notepad and at the beginning you'll see an entry like this:-

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<UnitData>
<General Allegience="0" LongName="Kurt Finkelstein's nitrous oxide boosted Messerschmitt 109 with ejector seat" ShortName="Messerschmitt Bf109G-3-422/H JG301 August 1943 Northern France" ModelName=.............

Change ShortName to something more useful like ShortName="Bf109G Nutcase" Short, snappy and to the point! Then delete the .BDP file in the aircraft's folder

Just make sure there isn't another aircraft in your install with the same ShortName.

BTW, I'm no professional, lol!

Hi James,

do what hairyspin suggested, he's hit the nail on the head.

Hairyspin,
I couldnt agree more with your observations re the short names being overdone leading to a sky full of text.

There is a perfectly good description section in every aircrafts .xdp file which is displayed in the aircraft menu system in game, where all this info can be displayed. Yet seldom is it used to its full potential.

regards Rob.

Thanks everyone for that, the skies are much clearer when I'm flying around, and now I know which aircraft are which in the menu. Cheers
