Repaint Advice Please?

Hi guys
After years of saying 'i cant do that', I thought it time to have go at some aircraft repainting. That was until I looked at the choices and price of editing software:isadizzy:

From what i've seen and heard on here, would i be correct in assuming most people use Adobe Photoshop? How is that different to Photo Elements?

I thought I had a copy of Coral Paintshop, but it turns out that was only licenced to a much older PC i once had, and was very old anyway.

I'd be very grateful for any tips, especially those relating to software choices, for a COMPLETE beginner;-)

cheers guys

Dougal95, as a starting editing software go with Coral Paintshop. About 100 bucks and then once you get comfortable you can graduate to the grand daddy Photoshop. Get the basics down first to be sure you wish to continue in that arena.

Oh wow! Had no idea that Gimp had 'what it takes' for this kind of thing;-)

Gimp is awesome. All the paints I've done (not that there are that many and not that they're that great) have been done on Gimp. It's easy to use, powerful, and FREE!

Guess it must be years since i've looked at Gimp. I dont ever remember it being able to work with layers. Downloading now;-)

How long did you live in Hawaii ?

The most easiest is to use a program which uses layers. When you just want to give it a try I advise you to start with Gimp as it is free and quite neatly does the trick.

Some quite nice tutorials can be found at the simmer's paintshop

Good luck,

I know you are in the Netherlands... :mix-smi::icon_lol::icon_lol:
but I couldn't resist it... You see, I lived in Hawaii for many years (well... 10 or so... Med school at Burns... at UofH...
anesthesia resident and staff at Tripler AMC)... and although genuine US citizens of a state of the Union... both local people as well as kamaaina (long time residents)
speak a sort of pidgin English... lots of "more better" and "no,?" etc. instead of you'd better oryou should etc.
and as you wrote in your post... "most easiest"
or often, more better... btw... do you say in Dutch things like most easiest ?
I know that in correct German there is Als besser which is literally "more better"
or Du must (you must) becoming the source of consternation as well as it creates funny situations... like when a German says to you "You must do this or that" they don't realize it sounds odd in English...
when they really mean... "You should..." I served tours in Wuerzburg, Nuremberg, and Landstuhl... and lived as an Army retiree in Italy from 1982 till 4 years ago...
I often quipped... You must? You mean if I don't, I go to jail or pay a fine... and my German interlocutor looked at me surprised... not understanding why I said that...
hahahaha... In English, rules are different... adjective have only 3 cases... 'good, better and best' and there are no adverbial add-ons ... in other words... nothing is most easiest... it is easier...(comparative)
or easiest (superlative)
Hope you don't take offense...your incorrect English is far better than my "no Dutch"... However... my consolation is that I can speak 6 languages fluently..... hahahaha

Gaucho, I work in an international organisation, with 18 member states and even more languages. Our official languages are English and French. However due to the influences from other languages we speak (and write) something which is a mixture of the best of all languages mixed with BBC English :icon_lol:

We use words which do not exist is any language. So "most easiest" sounds very normal to me :icon_lol: :icon_lol: :icon_lol:

Cheers,
Huub

I agree completely.....My daughter and me use Photoshop 7. Gimp is a very easy program to use for this as well and is free, and many here who do paints that do use it, make very quality looking repaints.....
Always remember, their are many if not all of us here who paint that will gladly help with advise and tips.....
Don't be afraid to ask something, no matter how stupid it may sound...(QUOTE: Their is no such thing as stupid questions, their is only stupid answers.)

Its a learning process, and once learned becomes like second nature, and is addicting....:jump: And can be very relaxing as well.....
Have fun with it.......
Craig.....:salute:

You need to download DXTbmp. See the video tutorial posted earlier in this thread. The tutorial shows how that program works to convert your files for editing. There is also a download link in the description on YouTube. Someone here will have the link for you as well, I'm sure. I would, but I'm not at my home machine right now.

As mentioned, all FSX textures are in DDS format and need to be converted before editing them. Just d/l DTXBmp, load the texture, double click the edit button and it will open the editor of your choice, do your edits, save and reload into DXTBmp, pretty easy.

Many....or perhaps most...but definitely not 'all' ....;)
