Repaint for one of Ito-San's oddities.

Ito-San's FS9 Yak-23 can be found at Simviation, file name Yak23.zip.

I just uploaded this repaint of Kazunori Ito's Yak-23 Flora, which represents that of serial number 925, that was assigned to the Instytutu Lotnictwa at Warsaw and was allocated the registration code GP-GLK. The Institute's logo is carried on the nose and tail. On September 21, 1957, Polish test pilot Andrzey Ablamowicz set a new World Altitude climb record when he took SP-GLK to 19, 151-ft. in 197 seconds.

The Yak-23 was the last fighter in the Yak line of aircraft and lost out to the MiG-15 and La-15 in the Soviet main line fighhter contract. It was still produced in many numbers for satellite nations and since this particular Yak-23 was a record holder and thereby stands its place in my aviation history catelog, I just had to do it.

I completely redid Ito-San's main textures. They were pixelated and I smoothed all out with the blur tool and repainting. The Institute's logo was worked up using a scan of a profile from Squadron's In Action book on Yak Fighters. Textures are 888-8 32-bit bitmap for best results.

I always found this aircraft design exceptional. It just looked fast sitting on the ground. Definitely a departure from anything they had done previous and this repaint of yours has sparked my interest once again Caz. . .well done. Now. . . . .where did I put that airplane, lol.:ernae:

If only Mr. Ito would grant permission to upload tweaked MDL files for his planes with reflective texturing enabled. So many of his planes would take a leap forward in visual appeal with just a couple minutes work.

I second that OBIO. I've tried to get in contact with Ito-San recently over this with no success. Has anyone heard from him lately? I'm a bit concerned in case his health has deteriorated; I know his eyesight was failing.

And thanks for the new textures Cazzie.

I'm assuming it's OK to convert to a reflective model (using Ivan Hsu's MDL program) as long as we don't upload it -- right?

Yep, individually we could probably do what we want to enhance the model. Even repaints could be done to the extent that 32bit could be used to preserve the detail and quality. His work has such potential above and beyond what is released, but he IS the designer and so that really dictates what can be done.

Worked up a new paint kit and went to work on a "what if" livery based on a Yak 17 paint I saw:

Pretty much done, just a few little spots that need to be corrected or retouched. For the most part though it's complete.

That's looking real good falcon. I plane on doing a new Paint Kit too, making new rivets in lieu of the cross-slashes, panels better shaded and highlighted.

I will try and make some jagged lines better by drawing vectored lines using the pen tool. I know it will take time, but it is a worthy project.

Ito-San doesn't always include a VC and this one has it.

Caz

Yea, this one has a decent VC, although some additional texturing would have taken it beyond decent, but nothing can be done about that. When I was doing the livery I resized the textures to twice normal size to get the lines sharper on the panels and allow some better details to show. I keep the oversized version in a "WIP" folder and just reduce the finished version, save to the new texture folder and convert the bmp for final use in the sim. I also changed the rivets. . . .I use PSP8 and I did two types of rivets and saved them as a "picture Tube", then when I do rivets, I can do long lines, angled whatever I want just by utilizing the picture tube tool and it spaces them according to the settings you give it. Pretty handy. . .I also change the "blend mode" to "soft light" and that lets the rivets pick up the color of the skin surface rather than being just a steel gray.
Here's the "Tanks" version. . . .

Probably gonna try one more livery, there are very few examples since this one never really made it to wide distribution and was eventually dropped for the Mig 15.
I'll probably try to do one of the Yak 23 that was used by the US for testing purposes. It carried AF markings, that should be interesting enough to paint.

quick update with pic. . . .just the fuselage01 bitmap started, but I think it'll look pretty good.

NP Smoothie, is your e-mail in your profile? If so I'll send it that way.
Here's another WIP. I probably won't post any more until later this evening as I'm off to a cookout in about half an hour or so.

thanks again Falcon, i'll upload my moller paints at some point instead of being selfish and keeping them for me :jump: hmm i sense a display Yak :ernae:

Probably my last one of this model. . .a fictional (aren't they all? lol) rendition of Yak 23 Reno Racer "Goldfinger". . . . .

nice work! :ernae: just starting my repaint on it...

well here she is, first up will be 'Golden Gal' , loads of work still to go on this beauty...
