Hi all

Apologies if this seems like a silly question but I'm still new to all this. If I did a repaint of the freeware Virtuavia\Alphasim phantom or for any aircraft is there anything i need to do permissions wise? legally? before releasing it and where\how do i post such a thing?

Regards

Check the documentation that came with the package. If you're still not sure, contact Virtavia directly.

Asking in any case of doubt is of course the best idea!

I use to follow this rule of thumb:
If an "official" paint kit is released and the readme file included doesn't say anything about further permissions concerning uploading to be asked for, then uploading will be okay.
But the readme should be read thoroughly!
Mario Noriega for example states in his documentation concerning the Piaggio 149 the following:

You can repaint it, but please ask me first, and send your work to me by E-Mail (Just for my fun). You can put it in free web site or distribute it freely to your friends.

That's a restriction easy to obey (I've received his permission about two days after asking).

Cheers,
Markus.

Like Master Painter Markus pointed out the readme or EULA text is the first stop and in almost any case will give you either clear permission to upload or share or might have specific guidelines what can and can't be done.
Some people have had bad experiences with certain sites for example and request that uploads are made only to site A or F. Even for free ware aircraft that is a request to be honored because we do not want to loose any more creative people from the hobby because of infractions of simple to follow rules.

Other developers might want to look at your work before it is uploaded. PAD for example is one that comes to mind. And again that is a simple thing to do and keeps everyone happy.

When dealing with payware this is of course the same thing. The difference might be the troubles you get into if not following the rules :D
In general though most free and pay ware developers are happy to see their work represented and understand that seeing Repaints posted often leads to new "customers" that might have been looking just for that particular aircraft.

Treating the community as such generally benefits all involved as some developers might be able to tweak a model to make a paint work better or add a configuration they had not even thought of.

Cheers
Stefan
