Replacing Stock A/C, Ships, Etc.

Hi all,

I know this subject has been covered before, but I am in the processes of doing a fresh install and wanted to replace the stock ships and weps but can't remember the steps for doing so.

In replacing the stock weps, do I need to hand edit the stock missions as well?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Weapons used are called out in the individual aircraft or ship .dp file, not in the mission file.

However, if the stock model is removed and a model with a different name is loaded to replace it, the mission will not start because it can't find the unit it is seeing in the mission text.

So then you would have to edit the missions to use the new models. This is easy to do with Morten's mk_cfs2_util.exe "CFS2 Aircraft and Mission Utility" tool. Or if you don't want to edit the missions, you could rename the replacement model to the same name as the original stock model.

To keep it simple, you probably want to use the same folder names as the original MS ships and planes. Just delete the contents of those folders and then copy the parts and pieces of the planes and ships into the original folders.

With ships, you have to also open up the ship.cfg file and modify the following lines as the sim wants the folder name, the DP file and the sim name in the ship.cfg file to be the same.

[fltsim.0]
title=sha_essex_cv9 <<<---Optional-but a good idea
sim=sha_essex_cv9 <<<---Must be the original name
model=
panel=

Once done, rename to DP file to match the "sim=" name.

Now CFS 2 will treat your planes and ships as if they were the stock MS AI and call them up for missions and quick combat without any further issues.

Remember: Planes only need the folder name matched. Ships need the folder name, the DP file and the CFG file all to match up.

Ok, got it. But if I replace all the stock a/c, say for a Korean theater install, don't I also have to edit the quick combat .cfg to reflect the new a/c?

Thanks,

TW

Yes. The QC file and probably also the model.dat file.

I generally don't use QC as the MB is more flexible, so my QC file has everything listed on it Xed out and the sim just ignores it. I also delete all the stock MS ships and planes from the model.dat file to preclude any issues CFS 2 has with what it wants to call up or see regarding that file.

Regarding the QC file, I just place an "x" in front of the planes I don't want it to read like this:

[option.0]
OptionName=%FightersOption%
xaircraft.0=F4F4_Wildcat
family_type.0=1
name.0=%F4F4_WildcatName%
xaircraft.1=F4U1A_Corsair
family_type.1=1
name.1=%F4U1A_CorsairName%
xaircraft.2=F6F3_Hellcat
family_type.2=1
name.2=%F6F3_HellcatName%
xaircraft.3=P38F_Lightning
family_type.3=1
name.3=%P38F_LightningName%
xaircraft.4=P39D_Airacobra
family_type.4=1
name.4=%P39D_AiracobraName%

Hi Jagd,

Thanks very much for your input. Another question, however: In replacing a/c and ships with differnet names than those in the model.dat file, would you recommend that the replacement a/c and ships be listed in the model.dat file?

Thanks,

TW

At one time I always updated the model file with new ships, but now I don't. Doesn't seem to matter; they show up in the MB drop down menue either way.

I do however, update my Info Folder > description.dat file with the new ships and I also place a 286 X 456 pixel screen shot or photo of the new ship with the title matching that of the ships folder. That way it will show up in the MB preview window when I'm deciding what ships to place into a mission.

You can get numerous ship photos for the Info folder in my latest Mission Builder Support Pack here in the archives.
