Returning - What's Good?

I am returning from my mission as a preacher for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Ghana, West Africa next week. I've been enjoying the work of the Lord for two years, but that means I've missed a lot of the new and coming goodies in this FS world.
What are the best freeware releases to have come in the last two years?
Post on Scenery, Planes, Skins, Utilities, etc.
Thanks! When I return, I'll report more on the work and how totally awesome it was, along with pictures, in the Newshawks forum.

Let's see.

Milton Shupe and Team released a killer Grumman F7F Tigercat (a few variants of it) and the XP-38 Grizzly (a few variants on it) and a superb AT-11 Kansan (a few variants of it as well).

Pable Diaz released two versions of a cloud and sky enhancement package....the latest is called HDEv2 and really takes the FS9 environment up several notches.

A ton of stuff has been released in the last two years. My advice: spend some time on AVsim.com, Flightsim.com, Simviation.com, CalClassics, RareWings, ClassicWings, Britsim, and the other hosting sites. Tons and tons of stuff in terms of planes, scenery, mesh, sounds, paints.

What is your FS 'bag'? If we know what your interests are, then we'll be able to advise a little better - as Obio said, we seem to be getting a never ending stream of goodies which, considering FS9 is supposed to be dead, is brilliant.

One new development that has set FS9 on it's head....a new way to export FS9 planes that allows poly counts and details like nothing seen before. You need a fast system with plenty of guts to use these birds....but they are stunning. PropTrash released a freeware Boeing Stearman that is uber detailed in every way...nuts and bolts are 3D, the wing wires vibrate in flight, the belly beacon actually turns....this plane looks as real as can be.

Lionheart is using this new export method to return to FS9 modeling (payware) and bringing some of his newer FSX only models back to us FS9 pilots.

Welcome back, cannot believe 2 years have gone by...
I have some wonderful sceneries you pointed out back then, in the Freeware Gems thread.
You'd do well to go back there and look, it lives in the FS 2004 Tweaks and Tips Subforum at the head of the page.

What's good in there? LOL! Yeah....forgot to mention the "Encyclopedia Of Great Freeware of All FS Time".

Tim

That thread is very good for older releases... but the world has advanced in two years.
I would post what my preferences are, but it has been two years! I dunno what I'll like when I get home. So post what are your favorite releases - of any type.

Premiere Aircraft Design has released a number of packages in the last two years. Check out their stuff here: http://www.premaircraft.com/

Milton Shupe and Team released the XP-38, the F7F, de Havilland Puss Moth and the AT-11: http://www.flightsimonline.com/

The F7F models and updates are in the SOH Warbirds Library.

Alphasim underwent a name change to Virtavia. During the last two years, Alphasim/Virtavia have released a number of their former payware models as freeware, including the T-28, the F-101, the S-55 Helo, The entire F-4 package, the B-66 Destroyer, the Super Cobra attack helo, the Future Lynx helo. Browse the freeware here: http://www.easyfly.co.nz/Freeware/index.php

OK, a British perspective:

Britsim.com didn't even exist 2 years ago, so most of what is on there will likely be new to you - Dave Molyneux (and team) have been putting out a wonderful (and ever expanding) series of Auster light aircraft, and there are plenty of other goodies on that site including ....

Jen B Kristensen, who has continued to provide us with some wonderful classics (new, and revised versions of some of his older stuff) - Britannia, Brabazon, loads of Shorts stuff... just do a search

A personal favourite of mine has been the Hawker Seahawks from Nazca Steve (they are here), a type long overlooked - they are all little gems and highly recommended Steve has also recently diversified and offered us a very nice set of Canberras, some freeware, some payware (but not much pay, well worth the modest outlay). They can be found via flyingstations.com

I'm assuming you are an FS9er, hence your post here; but if you do dabble in FSX then there are some goodies on Flyingstations; and Rob Richardson's models at Britsim are what finally made me reinstall FSX (even though I still don't use it overmuch.

I could go on (some people say I do ...); the 'inhouse' projects (Milton has already been mentioned, but there are one or two 'renovations going on (Obio & Smoothie, is that 'cat' ready yet?) and lots of activity here. But I do have to point you towards calclassic.com, where TC and the gang keep reaching new heights; over the past few months we've had a 'new' Curtiss Commando and a raft of improvements to the Douglas heavies, including some new DC-6A's this week! And speaking of Douglas props, you have to check out Manfred Jahn's DC-3/C-47, originally for FSX but kindly adapted by him for us luddites - at all good stockists (easiest to find at Flightsim though, do a search on his name) and a total delight.

And if any of the above are looking in - we don't say it enough, publicly, but a massive massive thank you to you all. :salute::applause::applause::icon29::icon29:

As I've said before, this is supposed to be a dead legacy sim, but it just keeps going - who knows what delights are just around the corner? :jump:
