Rex Essential and similar programs

Hi!

I have been using REX for a long time and I have been very satisfied with it. I upgraded to REX essential and it looks stunning but it kills my performance in the simulator (FSX). I get bad stutters and if I turn off REX everything is fine.

My questions are: Other similar programs like Active Sky, are they also hurting the performance? Are there freeware weather engine programs available?

Thanks.

I have REX essentials and AS2012, I do like REX but have found that the weather engin in AS2012 is much better and the program loads quicker, for me it is very frame friendly, even tho I have a high end machine I used
this guide http://www.simforums.com/forums/setting-up-fsx-and-how-to-tune-it_topic29041.html for fine tuning, I want to squeeze everything out of my machine as possible also take a look at Bojote's forum at Avsim there is a lot of good info there, hope this helps.

Cheers

I have either had or have about every addon known to man. I just recovered from a HD failure and after a week have most of FSX back to whre it was. But this time I made sure to test each one to see its effect on performance / stability. A little OT but I will get around to your specific question.

Without a doubt the worst resource hog, fps killer, stuter inducing program was MytrafficX, the latest ver. I now run with no ai traffic and do not miss the long long times and brain dead ai.

I also have loaded Activesky 2012,latest ver and Ultimate terrain. I just did not like the clouds that came with Activesky but their dyanamic weather, runways textures and others are great. So I reloaded Flight Enviro X which imo have the most realistic, easy on the eyes clouds/skies/sunsets. I have always ran Activesky and simply could not do without their dynamic weather. Install can be somewhat of a pita however... There are plenty of options for rez but I stay 512 or 1024 iirc. Anything above just looks to sharp imo.
Topped off with Ground enviro and even on my aging I7,2.8 with 6 gigs, Vista 64 wide screen 37 inch led, Gtx 660ti runs smooth even with the high end addon planes and high FSX graphics settings.
I also run the Bjote prog and then let it be. My days of endless CFG tweaking, moving sliders and chasing the Holy grail optimal settings are long over.

All that said the best thing to increase performance and stabilty was actually when windows got nuked along with FSX forcing me to reload FSX. Reloading I did some much needed house cleaning. I did not realize how much crap had accululated both on my system and FSX. All those progs installed, partially removed, old sceneries,Dlls from who knows where......

I never had a weather program before finally taking the plunge on REX Essential, so I cannot compare it to any other program. However the only time I ever notice it stuttering is whenever it does one of the weather injections. I get the green bar at the top of my screen that it is loading weather, it will stutter a few times, and then all is well. For some reason my FSX weather was on the frits, so for me this is a small price to pay to have accurate weather. Sounds to me though you are having issues with it stuttering all the time? My suggestion would be to go in to your options and just have it set up to inject your weather 1 time on start up. I have mine set currently to update every 15 minutes, or if I fly outside of a 50 mile or so area (whatever the smallest radius is). Maybe if you backed it down a bit it wouldn't stutter anymore. I also saw options for lower resolution clouds and stuff.

Hi!

Thanks for all replies, I will take your suggestions under consideration.
AI traffic is something I also think i can live without.

I dont really know what is the problem with my rex setup because the first time I run FSX with rex after a fresh start of the computer it runs fine at 25 fps. But if I close FSX to run other programs or games and start FSX again I get the stutters, and if I close REX in this situation it goes back to normal. Maybe REX is not the cause but only the thing that makes it tip over?

Thank you all for your insights and I will surely use some of the suggestions mentioned here. :salute:
