RFN Tacan and DSWO Carrier Tracks

I am having fun retrofitting my Alphasim and other carrier birds with the latest RFN (?) v4.1 gauges. However, since RFN changed and improved the gauge xml format - making it easier for the user to modify the settings to determine which carriers can be found with the Tacan - I now can't seem to find the Nimitz and Ike that are part of David's carrier tracks volumes 1 and 2 - and also the default MS carrier tracks (which I think I previously substituted Javier's Nimitz for the default carrier). This is probably because in the RFN xml gauge, the frequency for Javier's Nimitz (112) and the default MS carriers (111) - I think, in both cases - have now been taken by different carriers than the ones in Davids tracks.

I use Lamont Clark's AICarriers all the time but I also very much like the idea of flying in an area where I know there may be a carrier on one of David's tracks and then finding it using the RFN Tacan. Javier's Nimitz - just the model #3 -is in the RFN xml listing and is easily found using AI Carriers on 112 mgz. So, what I did was to decompile -using the AI boat compiler - David's Traffic files and change all the boats settings, eg. "CVN68_1" to "CVN68_3" to see if the Tacan would now find the Nimitz along the DSWO carrier tracks on 112.

No luck. I wonder if I have messed up the tracks by decompiling, etc as I have not visually seen any around lately. Easy fix is to reinstall the original carrier tracks traffic files, BUT then the RFN frequencies are taken by different carriers.

Now, all clear? Everyone follow me? :icon_lol::icon_lol:

You can edit the "gauges\RFN_Carriers.xml" file to add those missing carriers or change the frequencies so that they don't overlap others. Check your gauges folder for the previous version's "Carrier.xml" file. Since the latest version (4.0+) changed the name of the xml file to "RFN_Carriers.xml" your previous should be intact. You should be able to pull information from it to add to the new one in the new format.

Hope this helps.

Hmm, think I am making a mess of things as I am now getting some CTDs. Problem is, while I can tell which Nimitz model David has in the carrier tracks files from using the AI Boat compiler, I cannot tell which frequencies these are set to, or are all of Javier's Nimitz ships on 112? Or does the xml in the RFN gauge assign the frequencies to the different carriers? Maybe Sylvain will check in and give some guidance. Ideally I want the xml changed to find all the DSWO carriers and the default ones on tracks that comes with FSX.

The individual carrier gets it's frequency from the gauges/RFN_Carrier.xml file.

The frequencies can all be the same for every Nimitz (for example) unless you have some tracks with the same carrier within say 100 miles of each other. In which case the gauge will point to the closest and you really won't know which version of the carrier you are flying to until you get within visial range. If you give then individual frequencies or make sure they are spaced greater than 100 miles it won't be a problem.

The main thing that matters is that the "title=" line in the sim.cfg of the carrier must match the "Sim_Name=" line for that particular carrier in the gauges/RFN_Carrier.xml file. If that is true and the carrier is actually out there within 100 miles and you have tuned the assigned frequency (from the RFN_Carrier.xml file) the gauge will find it. If it doesn't, change the frequency on the dial and then change it back. The refresh will usually make it find the carrier.

Hope this helps. Please keep asking questions. I helped with the translation of the manual from French to English (along with Benoit Dubé) so I know how it all works pretty well.

Thanks Frank.

Been trying to add these entries but it kind of disables the gauge altogther and not sure where I am going wrong:

Hi Expat,
What RFN gauge version do you have?
The lines you put are a mix of different version: the xml structure have to be well written or the gauge will not work properly...
Assuming your using the last version (4.1), you should have something like that:

<carrier name="USS Nimitz CVN68-2"
<carrier name="USS Nimitz CVN68-2"
<carrier name="USS Nimitz CVN68-2"
<carrier sim_name="CVN68_2"

<carrier sim_name="CVN68_8"

Note that I replaced "<" by "#" because the forum editor didn't like it. Note also that Radius is no longer used, a "Carrier Name is needed (as fxsttcb said), and beware of "/>" that close each carrier block.

Sylvain

I had the 4.0 entries in the 4.1 xml. All operating correctly now. Thanks for the help guys!
